*CFP* "WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND GLOBAL ADAPTATIONS OF SHAKESPEARE", CONFERENCE

Women’s Rights and Global Adaptations of Shakespeare

November 25-26, 2021

Freie Universität Berlin

Many young contemporary directors in theatre and cinema find in the plays of William Shakespeare a unique opportunity not only to reflect on but also to challenge patriarchal traditions and structures of power. However, few, if any, conferences have acknowledged a growing willingness in productions of Shakespeare to confront problems surrounding the status of women. The goal of “Women’s Rights and Global Adaptations of Shakespeare” is to explore how Shakespeare’s plays have performed this function, and to consider the ways in which they can further imagine, and contribute to, more socially and politically equal futures for women across the globe.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

*CFP* "BEYOND THE ECHO CHAMBER – THE TACTICAL USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN SOCIAL MOVEMENTS", SPECIAL ISSUE, SOUTH ATLANTIC QUARTERLY

We invite proposals for essay submissions for a thematic issue of South Atlantic Quarterly focusing on the tactical and political uses of social media in struggles for radical social change. In this issue, we want to push past the well-worn tropes of the network and the echo chamber to consider how a range of social movements are making use of social media platforms in their social change efforts and with what consequences. Outside of their role as platforms for networked communication, recent scholarship has identified the important role played by social media as “discourse laboratories” and sites for collective identity construction. Social media platforms have become central tools and contested terrains not just for social justice movements but for those of the far Right as well. While much attention has been focused on the way that movements for social justice have deployed social media as a key tool for communication and mobilization, we also want to consider the ways that movements of the reactionary and radical Right make use of this digital infrastructure.

This issue will consist of contributions examining movements across the political spectrum and their use of social media in the context of their tactical repertoires and the political goals they seek to achieve. Beyond questions of communication, coordination, and mobilization, how are contemporary movements entering into these digital ecologies and how are they being affected by them? This timely collection aspires to contribute to the critical conversation about movements, social justice, free speech, and digital communicative infrastructure at a moment of surging activity across all these registers.

See details in English.

*CFP* "OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR COMPUTATIONAL SOCIAL SCIENCE METHODS", BOOK CHAPTER

We are living in a digital era where most of our daily activities take place both through applications and computers. This causes the big data phenomenon which is an important subject for scientific research with increasing of available tools and processing power. As a natural outcome of this trend, a growing number of social science scholars are using computational methods for analyzing social behavior. Theories of social sciences such as agenda setting, selective exposure and two-step of information flow have been using as a theoretical backbone by many computational researchers. The methods of computational social science do not mean that a method is only executed on a computer – social science scholars have been using computers in their research for a long time. Computational social science methods in research are expansion and enhancement of the existing methodological toolbox.

*CFP* "TRAUMA AND NIGHTMARE", 4TH INTERNATIONAL INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE

4th International Interdisciplinary Conference

Trauma and nightmare

(Online)

“Trauma” and “nightmare” have become the most popular metaphors of evil in our times. The old philosophical discussion about “the nature (or mystery) of Evil” has been replaced by modern (and postmodern) studies on trauma. Nightmare is a more and more frequent phenomenon, and it is being studied by dream and sleep researchers. However, nightmare means not only bad dream – today this term describes also a variety of unpleasant experiences, memories, emotions, so it deserves special attention as an important factor which characterizes human condition.

*CFP* "INTERNATIONAL SOUTHEAST ASIAN MEDIA STUDIES", VIRTUAL CONFERENCE

Southeast Asian Media Studies Association
Southeast Asian Media Studies: Histories, States, Theories and Futures
February 25th-27th, 2021
Online via Zoom

Media studies as an academic discipline is at a critical juncture on its development in the region. An interdisciplinary look on the history of Southeast Asia reveals that centuries before the idea of ASEAN integration was conceptualized, our precolonial ancestors have already established political, economic, and commercial linkages. From the Western colonial upbringing of print media and the silver screen, media practitioners have since then localized and innovated broadcast, online, and social media content to the tastes of its regional audience. Following the advent of the Internet, inter-country media consumption increased dramatically as content became accessible to the greater public. These progresses enabled media studies scholars to theorize on the political, cultural, social, economic, and linguistic issues that affect media production and consumption in the region.

*CFP* "HERITAGE AND THE CITY. SEMIOTICS AND POLITICS OF CULTURAL MEMORY IN URBAN SPACES", 39TH - 40TH ISSUES, LEXIA: JOURNAL OF SEMIOTICS

This Special Issue of Lexia aims at bringing together articles that critically reflect, from a semiotic angle, on the relation between cultural memory and the city, exploring the semiotic and political role that cultural heritage plays today within urban spaces, with a specific, although not exclusive, focus on difficult, uncomfortable and dissonant heritage (Macdonald; Tunbridge & Ashworth). Contributions from all disciplines dealing with cultural heritage are welcomed, since the issue intends to propose an interdisciplinary dialogue about the semiotic dimension of heritage in urban environments, that is, its meaning, but also its processes of construction, transformation, interpretation and translation.

The main issue at stake is the city-heritage connection. On the one hand, cities are places of collective memories par excellence: public spaces of mise-en-scène of historical, political, social identities and knotted fabrics of places of memory (“loci of collective memory”, according to the popular definition by the architect Aldo Rossi). On the other hand, cities are also dynamic spaces in constant transformation and redefinition, in which identities and memories are always renegotiated through everyday practices and re-written by the manifold subjectivities and communities that inhabit them. If the city is (a texture of) place(s) of memory, this memory has to be deemed as processual, dynamic and in constant evolution – a palimpsest in which traces and signs of both history and memory sediment, accumulate and stratify, generating complex and diversified effects of meaning.

*CFP* "TRUE CRIME IN AMERICAN MEDIA", CHAPTER BOOK

A new edited collection on true crime in 21st century American visual and audio media invites proposals for chapters.

This new book seeks to present original scholarship on the structure, themes and consumption of true crime in today’s visual/audio media landscape.

From sober documentary film through ‘binge-worthy’ streaming of podcasts and television series, true crime appears in a wide variety of styles and attracts an equally varied array of responses.  This book hopes to reflect as many approaches as possible.

While the central focus will be on American films and series of the 21st century, the collection would also benefit from discussions on the global reach and/or influences of such media, so proposals on such topics are welcomed.

*CFP* "GENDER AND MEDIA ECOLOGY", SPECIAL ISSUE, EXPLORATIONS IN MEDIA ECOLOGY (INTELLECT)

We welcome research contributions that explore the intersections of gender and media ecology. Studying media as environments and environments as media, media ecology explores how human-made artefacts shape the way we think, feel, and act (Postman, 1970, 1995). Hence, the term “media” includes any technology from the printed book, telephone, television, and the Internet, to clothing, architecture, and vehicles. Such media can be understood as extensions of human faculties (McLuhan, 1964), which inherit certain “biases” and create certain “effects” for the human condition (Strate, 2017). This special issue seeks to advance the “meta-discipline” of media ecology (Nystrom, 1973) with attention to the gendered dimensions of such environments and extensions.

“We shape our tools and thereafter they shape us,” argues Culkin through a media ecological lens (1967: 52). Yet, who is “we” and “us”? Media ecological work has looked into some of the roles gender plays in the philosophies and expressions that go into and come out of various media (see for example Drucker & Gumpert, 1997; Meyrowitz, 1985; Mumford, 1961; Paglia, 1990; Pederson, 2011; Shlain, 1998). The scholarship, however, is limited. This is especially the case for contemporary and emerging concerns in, with, and through various media, from revenge porn to the #MeToo movement along with other manifestations of gender discrimination, subversion, and emancipation.

*CFP* "CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE AND MEDIA", SPECIAL ISSUE 46.4 (WINTER 2021), CHILDREN'S LITERATURE ASSOCIATION QUARTERLY

2020 marks the tenth anniversary of Michelle Alexander’s groundbreaking work, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, which brought unprecedented attention to the ongoing discrimination present in the United States’ criminal justice system and its many devastating effects.

Numerous studies have also documented the ways in which children and young adults are impacted by the criminal justice system, whether they are in it themselves, have a family member in it, or are living with the expectation of entering it in the future.

This special issue will examine the responses of children’s literature and media, both contemporary and historical, to existing criminal justice systems in the United States and other countries and the representations of these systems in works for young people.

*CFP* "TEACHING JOURNALISM IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH: CONSTRAINTS AND OPPORTUNITIES", EDITED COLLECTION

The proposed edited collection aims to explore the possibilities and limitations of teaching journalism in countries with strong media control. Target publisher: Palgrave Studies in Journalism and the Global South, Palgrave Macmillan. Recent scholarship has expressed increasing concern over the importance of acknowledging the varieties of journalism and its teaching around the world. It has been suggested that universalistic assumptions of what constitutes journalism should be challenged and domestic cultural standards and diverse political configurations should be taken into account (Mensing and Franklin, 2011; Hanitzsch et al., 2019; Bebawi, 2016; Mikal, 2014; Obijiofor and Hanusch, 2011; Berger, 2011; Schiffrin, 2011; Josephi, 2010; Hossein, 2007; Friedman, Shafer and Rice, 2006). An interdisciplinary, cross-geographical approach has been advocated as a way to spur discussion and criticism of the theoretical and practical principles underpinning journalism education. Collaborative work, at the global level among journalism educators, could foster the reciprocal exchange of ideas promoting innovation in practice, curriculum design and research (Mensing and Franklin, 2011).

A focus on countries with robust media control, in times when the relationship between education and profession is being debated at a global level, might foster a discussion on the paradoxical features characterizing the tension between theory and practice. Typical questions arising are, for instance, whether journalism educators can teach effectively in a restrained media environment without compromising the very principles they are trying to abide by (Thompson, 2007). Existing studies note how in countries with strong governmental influence journalism programs face contradictory priorities over ideological impositions and commercial or educational imperatives (Obijiofor and Hanusch, 2011).
