*CFP* "COMMUNICATION, MEDIA AND GENDER", ISSUE 45, QUADERNS DEL CAC

The problem of gender imbalances has never been in the spotlight as it is nowadays. Even if it affects all spheres (political, economic, social and cultural), that of communication and the media is particularly relevant.

The aim of this special issue of Quaderns del CAC is to make visible the research on communication, media and gender, in order to contribute to a better understanding of this polyhedral phenomenon. The inclusion of the gender perspective is essential in any communication study, in order to provide an unbiased view of reality. In this regard, the research on communication and gender of the last four decades has come a long way with relevant contributions. Research on the role of women in the media system and their representation in media content have contributed to map the imbalances, their manifestations and consequences, and to pave the way for new approaches related to the complexity of the issue. These lines of research are supplemented by others about audiences, languages and about the contribution of the media to equality policies or the inclusion of the gender perspective in the creation of content for all cultural industries and in any media: press, radio, television, movies, video games, social networks, new media... At the same time, women’s empowerment processes both in traditional media and social media, as well as LGBT and Queer studies constitute new promising research perspectives.

We welcome papers that help to explain –from a wide range of approaches in the field of communication, media and gender – not only the ‘what’ and ‘how’ but also the ‘why’ and ‘what for’ of this complex and multifaceted reality.  We invite submissions addressing, but not restricted, to the following topics

  • Representation of gender in media content (informative, persuasive, narrative, entertainment...)
  • Power relations, organizational culture and gender imbalances
  • Feminization of work in the media
  • Gender-based communication policies
  • Gender and productive routines
  • Communication and sexist violence
  • Reception and consumption of gender stereotypes
  • Harassment and social networks
  • Gender discrimination and invisibility in the media

We also encourage submissions addressed to the miscellaneous ‘Articles’ section, focused on the ongoing research on audiovisual communication and culture. The call for papers for this section remains permanently open.

The text must be original and unpublished and not be subject currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. All papers are refereed through a double-blind peer review process. Quaderns del CAC will provide the authors with the positive or negative result of the review within one month and a half after the submission of the article. The text must be submitted in accordance with the guidelines of the journal.
