*CFP* "1970S CRIME AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE FILMS", EDITED COLLECTION

The editors are seeking historically and theoretically insightful essays that explore various aspects of crime and criminal justice films made and/or released in the United States during the decade of the 1970s. Individual contributions may address the social construction of crime, application of criminological theory, examination of moral dilemmas, as well as analysis that connects past representations to present social and cultural conditions. In-depth analyses of period representations of class, ethnicity, gender, masculinity, race, and sexual orientation are also desired. Potential contributors are encouraged to interpret and explore this topic area quite broadly and innovatively.

We invite abstract submissions from scholars at various levels and with varying perspectives, from diverse fields to include (but certainly not limited to) criminology, cultural studies, film and media studies, gender studies, history, and sociology. Individual essays may focus on only one film exclusively, or may instead put the contents of two (or a maximum of three) conceptually related films into conversation with one another. A partial list of relevant films is provided below; other films not listed may be considered provided they have a U.S. release date in the 1970s. We anticipate a broad audience for this collection to include scholars as well as students of the humanities and social sciences at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

If you are interested in contributing to this planned essay collection, please submit a 300-word abstract (including working title) of your proposed essay, along with a copy of your CV, to both Kylo-Patrick Hart (k.hart@tcu.edu) and David Mackey (damackey@plymouth.edu) by September 15, 2021. If accepted for inclusion, completed essays (containing approximately 5,500-6,000 words, including references) will be due by March 1, 2022. Essays must be original works not previously published or currently under review elsewhere.
