*CFP* "ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, THE FUTURE OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH", BOOK CHAPTER

In this Third Millennium, Artificial Intelligence poses great opportunities and challenges to societies throughout the global world. These new technologies have facilitated the exchange of instantaneous, universal, and multidirectional information. The global impact of Artificial intelligence has sparked heated debate among scholars, legal professionals, governments, entrepreneurs, and other change agents at all levels of society. Colleges and universities, as producers of knowledge, occupy a central place in these debates. Understanding the impact of AI on higher education is thus a crucial and timely task.

What is the role of higher education in the societal and economic changes created by AI? Are universities prepared to respond to and support these changes? Is higher education able to prepare students for the challenges posed by AI as they enter the workforce and become our future leaders? What opportunities and challenges do colleges and universities face? What are the short-term and long-term benefits and costs of using AI in higher education?

AI technologies provide free and easy access to information and big data. It connects people and ensures access to education for all. In this way, AI has fundamentally affected the conditions and culture of teaching and learning in many of today’s societies, and the changes are spreading to every corner of the world. To apply AI technologies in higher education successfully, we must examine:

  • The roles of teachers and learners;
  • Traditional and virtual universities;
  • Conventional teaching and pedagogical methods that employ AI technologies;
  • Local identities and contexts, and the appropriate adaptation of AI to different environments;
  • How AI is influencing scientific research?

As AI rapidly develops, its momentum in society as a whole and its use in higher education and scientific research prompt an urgent need for scholarly inquiry. The application of AI in education can bring about immediate and positive outcomes in sustainable development. Changes that could affect societies on the grand scale calls for all players (governments, universities, private sector, and research centers) to devise strategies that will maximize positive results.
