*CFP* "GRAPHIC NOVELS, COMICS AND POPULAR CULTURE", 42ND ANNUAL CONFERENCE SOUTHWEST POPULAR / AMERICAN CULTURE ASSOCIATION (ONLINE)

Graphic Novels, Comics, and Popular Culture
The Graphic Novels, Comics, and Popular Culture subject area chair welcomes presentation proposals on formal, cultural, historical, and theoretical dimensions of sequential art in all its forms (comics, graphic novels, anime, etc.).

Presentations may focus on a single work, put works into productive conversation with one another, or investigate relationships between works of sequential art and their transmedia adaptations; in the latter case, however, significant emphasis should be placed on sequential art – those proposals focusing predominantly on film, television, gaming, or other formats might be better suited for other interest areas.

*CFP* “ECO-COMICS: WHAT GROWS IN THE GUTTER?”, SPECIAL ISSUE OF CLOSURE

Open Section

In the fall of 2019, CLOSURE will once again offer a forum for all facets of comics studies. From literary, cultural, media, social and image research to the sciences and beyond: the seventh edition of CLOSURE continues our ongoing search for the best and most innovative articles and reviews representing the state of the art in comics research. We welcome detailed close readings as much as comics theory and pioneering approaches to the medium — our open section comprises a diverse range of interdisciplinary studies of all things ›comic‹.

Thematic Section: »Eco-Comics: What Grows in the Gutter?«

What is the ecology of comics? Is it, like Gregory Bateson’s ›ecology of mind‹, a sort of complex and living tangle that fights and collaborates, like the one that can be found in woods on the mountains? And if so: how does this relate to the tangle of words and images we call ›comics‹? Do its panels and sequences present interconnected, plural, and reversible ›images of nature‹? And if the Book of Nature can no longer contain an Ecology without Nature (Morton) — can the Eco-Comic do better?

*CFP* “CREATING COMICS, CREATIVE COMICS 2019: BEYOND”, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH WALES

Creating Comics, Creative Comics 2019: Beyond
Comics Symposium 2019
Friday 31st May – Saturday 1st June 2019
University of South Wales, Cardiff Campus

We are interested in what lies beyond. In current comics practice, what lies yonder? In particular we are interested in emerging issues of materiality and practice that creators and practitioners consider when constructing work. We ask how these constructions developed for viewing-reading change according to materiality, embodied practices and creative decision making.

This two-day single-panel Symposium, aims to explore, practitioner and creator perspectives in comics creation and production.

*CFP* "FEMINIST COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS IN A GLOBAL FRAME", ISSUE 6 SPRING 2020 FEMINIST ENCOUNTERS JOURNAL

The success of longer form comics, or “graphic novels” emerging from the West such as Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis (2003, 2004) and Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home (2006) have introduced a new way of sharing personal female stories that signpost a political experience. This complements the more-established prose tradition of autobiographical works existing within feminism. The success of such graphic novels, in terms of financial gain and critical acclaim have supported a cultural elevation of the comics form and a recognition of its transformative possibilities within an ever-widening variety of disciplines, including medicine and law.

This special issue seeks toresist a US/European focusin order to interrogate how and why the comics form is being used by women in a wider global context, particularly where disseminating feminist messages. In doing so, the intention is to add to an understanding of the form’s potential as well as a broadening of our cross-cultural understanding of visual representation of women and feminist messages. Submissions are encouraged that take up issues of form as well as content within a feminist context with an emphasis on comics works by women that are previously little known about.
