*CFP* "FROM THE SCENIC ESSAY TO THE ESSAY-EXHIBITION. EXPANDING THE ESSAY FORM IN THE ARTS AFTER LITERATURE AND FILM", S:PAM CONFERENCE

From the Scenic Essay to the Essay-Exhibition. Expanding the Essay Form in the Arts after Literature and Film

Ghent University (Belgium)

27th-29th of April 2022

More than 400 years after the publication of Michel De Montaigne’s Essais, the enduring afterlife of the essay form attests how this 'heretical form’ (Adorno) not only continues to challenge the literary conventions but also transgresses the borders of the literary field to venture into other artistic disciplines. The genre of the essay film is the most prominent example of this dissemination but the expansion has set out into other areas as well. Engaging with this emerging prominence, From the Scenic to the Essay-Exhibition welcomes scholars and art practitioners to present their academic and artistic engagements with the essay form.

*CFP* "PERFORMING ANIMATION, ANIMATING PERFORMANCE", BOOK CHAPTER

We are seeking proposals for additional chapter contributions for an edited collection on the intersection of animation and performance.

From the early animators who appeared in whole or in part in their films (think of J. Stuart Blackton, Emile Cohl, or Winsor McCay) to the more recent debates about the creative ownership of motion capture characters, performance is a spectre that is present in all forms of animation. ‘Acting’ and performance are often considered integral to the practice of animation, particularly the process of animating characters. In his 2013 book Shadow of a Mouse, Donald Crafton considers animated characters as performers. At the same time, notions of ‘animation’ and coming to life underpin conceptions of performance, coming to bear on how we might understand and theorise performance across multiple disciplines.

This book aims to put ‘animation’ and ‘performance’ in a productive dialogue in a way that will enhance our understanding of animation and performance, both separately and together.

*CFP* "VISUALIZING CLIMATE CRISIS", NEW ISSUE, VISUAL STUDIES JOURNAL

Visual Studies Journal in collaboration Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool invite thematic and illustrated essays in traditional format (6-8,000 words) that critically and conceptually examine how we come to see, understand, and respond to climate crisis.

By foregrounding the visual as an optic to better understand and examine these pertinent and timely issues, we welcome proposals that examine:
  • How artists, activists, communities, and institutions deploy the use of photography and visual culture as a way of understanding the past, present and future impacts on communities, audiences, and people around the globe.
  • Specific works of art and art practices that either historically or contemporaneously explore issues of climate crisis.
  • Critique the role and relationship between galleries, museums, institutions and issues of climate crisis, advocacy, and education.
  • Climate migrancy, the history of land and water management, food, and agricultural processes and/or the impact of food, clothing, and electrical consumption in relation to climate crisis.
  • Food, biodiversity, recycling, land and water use, climate and race justice, architecture, non-human animals, and alternative energy sources as issues related to the climate crisis, either negatively or positively.

*CFP* "NEW FICTIONAL FORMATS AND AGE-OLD NARRATIVES: UNDERSTANDING CREATIVE MODES OF POPULAR CULTURE IN THE DIGITAL AGE", POPMEC RESEARCH BLOG

Constant transformation has been the norm in the new digital media environment since its inception. During the 2020 health crisis, the impact of this ever-changing digital world in our daily lives has been especially notable. Due to quarantine measures, the only opportunity to interact with friends and to consume culture was to rely on social networks, streaming services and video conferencing softwares. Web-based cultural activities have affected people’s relationships with cyberspace: many have visited museums, seen award ceremonies, and even been to concerts online. In other words, we are never disconnected from the Internet (DeNardis 2020).

Our continuous virtual presence has had a radical aesthetic influence in our lives. Fictional narratives have been evolving hand in hand with the continuous change in digital media—from vaporwave and memes to changes in the way we write and express ourselves. These new ideas and symbols have developed thanks to online trends, both in terms of rhetoric and via the emergence of new words. Renowned writers such as Jennifer Egan and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie have not overlooked this transforming environment and have published their works on social media platforms in a serialized format (what is now known as Twitterature). Their cases are notable examples of how the possibilities to share content and combine mediums in order to create fictional narratives have grown exponentially. While the content of those stories has not been significantly altered by the format, we can look at this phenomenon from the perspective of media scholar Marshall McLuhan: the medium is the message.

*CFP* "MI AVATAR Y YO. AUTORÍA EN ENTORNOS DIGITALES", XXIII CONGRESO DE LA ASOCIACIÓN ALEMANA DE HISPANISTAS 2021

Sección 1: Mi avatar y yo. Autoría en entornos digitales
24-27th February, 2021

*CFP* "ART AND AFFECT IN THE PREDICTIVE MIND", INTERDISCIPLINARY AND INTERNATIONAL 2020 CONFERENCE

24-25th September, 2020

The conference will bring together philosophers, art historians and cognitive scientists for the first systematic exploration of the rich and still largely uncharted interactions between predictive processing and aesthetic experience.

The Theme
Predictive processing (PP) is an emerging framework at the cutting edge of theoretical cognitive science, and its philosophical implications are currently being hotly debated. This wide-ranging approach describes the human brain as an embodied probabilistic model of the world, constantly generating predictions about the causes of its sensory states and updating itself when a prediction error is encountered, in an effort to maintain a sustainable and homeostatic exchange with its environment. This prediction error minimization process is often taken to be an imperative of every biological system and a possible unifying principle for understanding perception, action, attention, experience and learning.

*CFP* “READING #INSTAPOETRY”, 2020 CONFERENCE

Reading #Instapoetry
27 de Mayo de 2020

One of the unexpected side effects of the digital age has been the revival of poetry as a popular art form. Rupi Kaur’s collection Milk and Honey has become an astonishing worldwide publishing phenomenon, but she is only the most high profile example of a new wave of poets who have bypassed the traditional routes to success. These poets create poetry that is generally short and places heavy emphasis on inspirational messages, and then use various social media platforms, most notably Instagram, to share their work directly with a reading public.

Audiences that have traditionally been resistant to literary work have flocked to these writers, and in a few short years this movement – if indeed it should be classified as a movement – has become enormously popular. At the same time, the poetry world has seen something of a backlash against these writers, most notably exemplified by  Rebecca Watt’s essay “The Cult of the Noble Amateur” (PN Review, 2018). Instapoetry has also been largely snubbed by academia for several reasons, not least that much of the poetry itself is resistant to formal analysis on account of its simplicity of message and lack of formal innovation.

*CFP* "RADICAL IMMERSIONS: NAVIGATING BETWEEN VIRTUAL/PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTS AND INFORMATION BUBBLES", CONFERENCE

Radical Immersions: Navigating between virtual/physical environments and information bubbles
8 – 10 September 2019 Watermans Centre, London, UK

Over the past years, immersive technologies have been hyped as consumer gadgets, entertainment media and the future of exhibition practices. The free distribution of VR headsets with smartphones and the increasing interest of museums, festivals and other cultural organisers towards ‘immersive digital content’ have quickly turned VR and AR devices and applications into widely recognized cultural artefacts. The promotion of ‘full immersion’ in the physical spaces of exhibitions and museums has led to some venues relying solely on interactive projections and audience interaction. However, just like many earlier ‘new media’ before them, the hyperbolic promises attached to these technologies’ supposed capacity to deliver immediacy and trigger a paradigm shift in media culture have thus far hardly become reality.

Creating Comics, Creative Comics 2019: Beyond
Comics Symposium 2019
Friday 31st May – Saturday 1st June 2019
University of South Wales, Cardiff Campus

We are interested in what lies beyond. In current comics practice, what lies yonder? In particular we are interested in emerging issues of materiality and practice that creators and practitioners consider when constructing work. We ask how these constructions developed for viewing-reading change according to materiality, embodied practices and creative decision making.

This two-day single-panel Symposium, aims to explore, practitioner and creator perspectives in comics creation and production.
