*CFP* "ANIMATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY. RETHINKING IMAGES AND TECHNOLOGY", 27TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF FILM STUDIES

Animation in the 21st Century. Rethinking Images and Technology

27th International Conference of Film Studies

Rome, 25-26 November 2021

Roma Tre University

Online – Microsoft Teams platform

The 27th International Conference of Film Studies Animation in the 21st Century. Rethinking Images and Technology aims to investigate the critical role played by animation in contemporary audio-visual culture. Animated images have a significant and crucial position in current Film and Media Studies: they are the audio-visual horizon in which some of the most decisive and stimulating technological, aesthetic, narrative, political, and cultural challenges are faced. While contemporary works retain some of the fundamental elements of the tradition of animated film, taking them to a new level of sophistication, they also continue to represent a field of absolute experimentation in their audio and visual aspects.

*CFP* "CRITICAL ICT INFRASTRUCTURES AND PLATFORMS", 14TH CMI INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

 Critical ICT infrastructures and platforms

14th CMI International Conference

Hybrid (online/In-person): 25-26 November 2021

ICT infrastructures and platforms are increasingly pervasive and critical for societies, systems and organizations and for individuals. It is, therefore, of great importance that efficient and resilient infrastructures are developed and deployed and that disruptions of services caused by either cyber-attacks or other interruptions of services are mitigated. Also, as digital platforms constitute crucial communication infrastructures for societies, it is important that such platforms contribute to democratic processes and economic and social fairness.

The 14th CMI conference will be concerned with these topics from different complementary angles: The development and deployment of fast and efficient communication infrastructures including cloud and edge technologies; resilience of ICT systems in order to increase cyber security and mitigate cyber-attacks; institution of social practices and governance approaches that will promote democratic discussions and processes, contribute to economic and social development, equity and fairness, and protect privacy.

*CFP* "ANIMATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY. RETHINKING IMAGES AND TECHNOLOGY", 27TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF FILM STUDIES

Animation in the 21^st Century. Rethinking Images and Technology

Rome, 25-26 November 2021

The conference aims to propose a reflection that examines the dynamics and mechanisms behind the creation of some of the most interesting national and international contemporary animation trends. The topics will place them in close connection with the current media scenario (cinema, advertising, videogames, the web, animated documentaries, TV series, contemporary art, digital culture) and with transmedia aesthetic and narrative forms originating from different cultural paradigms.

The conference will pay particular attention to the conjunction between theories and practices and between mainstream and experimental forms. Hence, it intends to investigate animated films as an industrial, narrative, aesthetic and ideological “system” promoting imaginaries, aesthetics, and values. It also delves into the production of artists who move on the borders, free from conditioning and devoted to the more advanced technological research. Therefore, the conference’s overall aim is to revitalize and address the concept of animation in contemporary visual culture, investigating its theoretical, historical, political, and cultural nature in relation to the new moving images.

*CFP* "DESIGNING FOR PLAY AS A CULTURAL PARTICIPATION CHILDHOOD. SEEKING NEW GROUNDS", SPECIAL ISSUE, REVISTA CONJUNCTIONS: TRANSDISCIPLINARY JOURNAL OF CULTURAL PARTICIPATION

This special issue of Conjunctions. Transdisciplinary Journal of Cultural Participation invites contributions that explore children's play as cultural participation and production empirically and theoretically, especially in how we can design for cultural participation and production.

The recognition of the importance of play in childhood is deeply rooted in the Nordic research on child culture. For years the Nordic studies of children have been defending children's right to unguided play, driven by the participants as a fundamental condition for participatory cultural practice in childhood. At the same time, the conditions for children's play have changed fundamentally, and as a result of this, the conditions for children having the possibilities to explore their capacity as cultural producers have also changed. We have seen a decline in children’s traditional and self-governed participatory play culture. The unguarded play has become scarce, replaced by monitored places and transparent architecture in day-care, kindergarten, schools, and homes. This creates new challenges for contemporary play research and practices if we still want to promote play as cultural participation and production.

The question is how we can design for play, driven by the participants. Design for play in that sense demands high awareness of how we think and define play in theory as well as in everyday practice, addressing the possibilities for participation as productive play culture.

*CFP* "VIRTUAL WORLDS IN EARLY CINEMA: DEVICES, AESTHETICS AND AUDIENCES", 13TH INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON THE ORIGINS AND HISTORY OF CINEMA

13th International Seminar on the Origins and History of Cinema

Virtual worlds in early cinema: devices, aesthetics and audiences

Online edition, October 20th - 22nd 2021

Universitat de Girona & Museu del cinema

The seminar Virtual worlds in early cinema: devices, aesthetics and audiences comes from an obvious desire for articulating a clear relationship among cinema’s past and contemporary audiovisual’s present. The nodal point of the project is the concept of virtual worlds. As Pierre Lévy states, we assist nowadays before a “general movement of virtualization has begun to affect not only the fields of information and communication but also our physical presence and economic activities, as well as the collective framework of sensibility and the exercise of intelligence. The process of virtualization has even affected our modalities of being together, the constitution of a collective "we" in the form of virtual communities, virtual corporations, virtual democracy...”.

*CFP* "NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS", EDITED COLLECTION

This edited collection will consider Nightmare Before Christmas as a milestone in animation and film history as well as a key cultural object with lasting impact. The book will be inserted in Bloomsbury’s Key Film/Filmmakers in Animation series.

In the thirty years since its release, Nightmare Before Christmas has drawn repeated academic attention. Many of these contributions have seen the film as an entry point to larger arguments about Tim Burton’s work, whether in terms of its animation (Cuthill 2017), representations of gender (Mitchell 2017), and use of fairy tales (Burger 2017). Less often, Nightmare Before Christmas has been considered in relation to other frameworks, such as its presence beyond the film industry, in theme parks (Williams 2020a, 2020b), and the way it negotiated changing cultural expectations of children’s media and horror (Antunes 2020). Though this literature has shed light on several aspects of the film’s significance, there is to date no sustained scholarly inquiry that brings these insights together and examines the historical and cultural significance specifically of Nightmare Before Christmas. This edited collection seeks to address this gap, considering the different layers of meanings and history of Nightmare Before Christmas from pre-production to the present day.

*CFP* "THE ALLURE OF OBSOLESCENCE", INAUGURAL ISSUE, ARTIFACT & APPARATUS: JOURNAL OF MEDIA ARCHAEOLOGY

We are excited to announce the launch of and call for papers for a new peer-reviewed, open-access online journal, Artifact & Apparatus: Journal of Media Archaeology. We invite scholars, curators, and practitioners from art history, film and media studies, library and information science, science and technology studies, and related fields to contribute articles on the history, theory, aesthetics, and practice of media objects, broadly conceived. From digital information networks to early electrical communications tools; from closed-circuit video surveillance systems to mechanical typewriters; and from pre-cinematic optical toys to virtual reality artworks, we invite contributors to reconsider the material objects that record, store, transmit, and reproduce texts, images, sounds, and information.

Why "artifact and apparatus"? We want to harness these words' multiple meanings to encourage a revision of media history grounded in its material artifacts and technological apparatuses—both physical and virtual objects (lantern slides, video files, wax cylinders, newsprint) and the traces of their mediation and marks of their materiality (signal loss, bit-rot, deterioration, decomposition), as well as the instruments, machines, devices, and equipment (computers, cameras, cables, projectors) and their functions and dispositifs.

*CFP* "PHILOSOPHICAL REFLECTIONS ON MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY", THEMATIC ISSUE, JOURNAL ATHENA: PHILOSOPHICAL STUDIES

Journal Athena: Philosophical Studies invites to submit the articles for the thematic issue Philosophical Reflections on Media and Technology.

Media and technology are important topics in contemporary philosophical reflections. They were discussed in the works of renowned thinkers, such as B. Latour, D. Harraway, B. Stiegler, F. Kittler – to name only a few – their insights have shaped the way we live and think in our highly technologized world.

However, recent technological developments and the rise of machine learning and artificial intelligence urge us to think further about the impact of media on culture and humans, and formulate bolder hypotheses concerning the modes of technological existence and agency. Moreover, the new media and the smart technologies invite us to reconceptualize the classical philosophical questions and define the new ontological, epistemological, and ethical aspects of media and technology.

*CFP* "A CRITICAL COMPANION TO JULIE TAYMOR", CRITICAL COMPANIONS TO CONTEMPORARY DIRECTORS LEXINGTON BOOKS SERIES

Considered as a true visionary, Julie Taymor is one of the of the most experimental and intellectually engaged film and theatrical directors working today. Her fusion of folklore, pop-culture, and classic literature has resulted in a series of fascinating and intellectually demanding works, both on stage and screen. From her beginnings with downtown not-for-profit theater through her Broadway successes and failures to her idiosyncratic career in Hollywood, Taymor has proven herself a notable and important artist.

This collection will explore Taymor’s career, with an emphasis on her work in film, from Fool’s Fire (1992) to more renown productions such as Titus (1999), Frida (2002), The Tempest (2010) and the recent The Glorias (2020). As the first comprehensive scholarly volume on Taymor, covering her entire career in cinema, we are currently inviting the submission of 250-300 word abstracts for essays to be included in A Critical Companion to Julie Taymor set to be published in the Lexington Books series Critical Companions to Contemporary Directors, edited by Adam Barkman and Antonio Sanna.

*CFP* "ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF THE BBC", SPECIAL ISSUE, CRITICAL STUDIES IN TELEVISION

In 2022, one hundred years will have passed since the formation of the British Broadcasting Company, later to become the pioneering public service broadcaster best known as the BBC. The BBC has had an enormous impact on television culture in its first one hundred years, providing a blueprint for independent publicly funded broadcasting. The BBC has been a testing ground for new developments in broadcasting technology and infrastructure. It has provided space for programme makers to innovate new forms, as well as to display national traditions - and invent some of its own. It has offered important public space to playwrights, scientists, politicians, musicians, historians, performers and many more thinkers to enlighten, to amuse, to infuriate.

Its formative mantra of ‘inform, educate, entertain’ has undergone many modifications over time but these aims remain core to its contemporary ethos. Its goal of providing impartial and balanced news, current affairs and analysis has been tested numerous times in divisive political climates. It was born of a patriarchal, colonialist and elitist view of cultural uplift. How has it changed over its long life?

*CFP* "FASHION, BODY AND CULTURE", INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

"Fashion, Body and Culture" International Conference

30-31 January 2021

London Centre for Interdisciplinary Research

Applying diverse methods from across subject disciplines the conference will explore fashion and style in wide-ranging contexts. It will examine connections between fashion, body and culture and will focus on dress, cosmetics, coiffure and body alterations (piercing, tattooing, circumcision, aesthetic surgery, etc).

How does our dress or hair style create our identity and status? How is it concerned with sexual and body politics? Is the desire to be "in fashion" universal or unique to Western culture? These and other questions we set out to discuss at the conference.
