*CFP* "MEDIA AND CREATIVITY", INTERNATIONAL ONLINE CONFERENCE

“Media and Creativity” International Conference

London Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (online)

2021-11-27 to 2021-11-28

Nowadays we live and breathe media, minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour. News, television, social media, celebrity culture, music, and more. As the media and communication sector becomes ever more diverse and dynamic, and we are going to consume it, we also need to understand it.

Today, the new bio-technical forms of life produced by mainstream digital media and by a whole range of artistic and non-artistic practices confront us with unprecedented theoretical questions, which can be dealt with by combining profound and perplexing perspectives. We need appropriate theoretical frameworks in order to understand the phenomena.

*CFP* "NAVIGATING DIGITAL COMMUNICATION AND CHALLENGES FOR ORGANIZATIONS", BOOK CHAPTER

The dialogue between organizational communication and digital communication is a common practice in contemporary organizations. This cross working allows the development of new narratives inside and outside organizations, causing communication professionals to face a moment of change in communication management, regarding form, content and production. Digital communication is not developing a virtual world, but a real virtuality integrated with other forms of interaction in an increasingly "hybridized" everyday life. In fact, the relationship between organizations and its publics evolved into more symmetrical models - allowed by digital media -, being imperative the recognition of the inevitable involvement of citizens in organizational communication processes that give rise to new business and institutional choices. On the other hand, the relationship that audiences establish with organizational information in digital environments may also interfere with the way in which each individual experiences daily life. Thus, the impacts are conjoint and paradoxical. It is well known that public involvement has the power to promote an active circulation of media content and that this can generate economic and cultural value for organizations. The current perspectives on interactions between audiences, organizations and content production suggest a relational logic between audiences and media, through new productivity proposals. In this sense it is interesting to observe the reasoning of audience experience through the concepts of interactivity and participation. However, it can be observed a gap between the intentions of communication professionals and their organizations and the effective circulation and content retention among the audiences of interest, as well as the distinction between informing and communicating. Thus, the goal of this book Navigating Digital Communication and Challenges for Organizations is to provide an in-depth review of research related to the concepts and theories around topics such as Publics and Productivity, Interactivity and Participation in organizational communication settings, including, but not limited to conceptualizations, theoretical foundations, conceptual analysis, empirical studies, cases, applications, and interventions. We aim to contribute to an improvement in our understanding of Digital Communication in Organizations, and to present resources to better navigate this difficult times of organizational communication management.

*CFP* "CULTURE WARS: STATUES, FLAGS, STREETS AND SQUARES", NEW SPECIAL ISSUE, WESTMINSTER PAPERS IN COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE

Flags, emblems, monuments, street names, statues are some of the means by which nations and states promote themselves, both to their own citizens and to the world at large; the public face of our imagined communities. But as they seek to unify, such symbols have often been the occasion for contestation, disagreement, violence even. Empires, systems, regimes rise and fall. Societies change, and with such change comes a reassessment of societies’ symbolic life, as yesterday’s heroes become today’s villains, past triumphs a present embarrassment. The past is continually raked over, re-examined and reinterpreted, with each re-examination argued over. Examples abound from across the globe: the toppling of Rhodes’ statue in Cape Town in 2015; in Budapest, Soviet era leaders are gathered together in Memento Park. While Ukraine had by 2017 decreed the removal of all 1,320 statues of Lenin. And in Germany there are no monuments commemorating the military in the war years.

In the USA, statues of Confederate leaders are being taken down; thwarted by a statute forbidding such removals, the mayor of Birmingham Alabama had one offending figure covered in plastic. Outside Delhi statues of military and British royalty languish, a ‘shambles’ in a ‘veritable dust bowl’ (Times of India) awaiting a revamp that never seems to arrive, the neglect telling its own story. In the UK the national flag and the statues of slavers are being fought over by the government and sections of the population deploying memes, hashtags and video footage whilst also appearing in official and commercial films, TV, documentary, news footage.

*CFP* "DEBATING ADVERTISING: ETHICS, EFFECTIVENESS, & CREATIVITY", BOOK CHAPTER

This book seeks to showcase current academic debates and multiple disciplinary perspectives on adversiting. The contributions in this book will help create a comprehensive overview of academic discourse on contemporary advertiting. Perspectives on the ethics of advertising, the challenges to measuring advertising’s impact, and the importance of professional creativity are particularly encouraged.

Proposed chapters might address whether advertising is purely manipulative, whether it encourages over consumption, whether it creates monopolies, or whether it serves primarily to make the rich even richer. Chapters might also argue that advertising encourages and rewards creativity, enriches people’s connections to their possessions and experiences, fills needs rather than creating them, provides society with good models for emulation, or offers genuinely aesthetic experiences. These are just some possibilities—we are seeking a range of opinions, approaches, and perspectives.

The book proposal will be submitted to the Palgrave Macmillan series “Palgrave Debates in Business and Management,” (series editor Anders Örtenblad) which looks for edited collections “taking stock of controversial and complicated topics within business and management” in refreshing and creative ways.

*CFP* "MINORS AND USER-CREATED CONTENT ON VIDEO PLATFORMS", SPECIAL ISSUE, MEDITERRANEAN JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION

The phenomenon of underage influencers on video platforms is experimenting an unrelenting growth in the consumption, activity and presence of brands in relation to audiovisual content and on the potential for influence and social transformation of some of this content. All of this contributes to increase the complexity and associated problems as it is a phenomenon that is only partially regulated in current legislation. There are new and emerging research challenges in relation to the audiences involved: minors who created content, parents or legal guardians, YouTube (YT) Professionals, followers, teachers, scholars and researchers and the society at large.

Being an influencer is one of the top 10 most desired professions by Spanish minors (Adecco, 2018). Immersed in a culture of participation (Jenkins, 2006; Aparici & Osuna, 2013), YT offers a space where audiovisual content can be hosted and that allows users to interact with it through searching, sharing and commenting on such contents around which they build online communities. Minor creators express their identities through videos that reflect their perspectives on life and in turn exert influence upon their community of followers (Tur-Viñes, Nuñez- Gómez and González-Río, 2018). This social system is based around audiovisual content with several implications for government regulation, self-regulation, advertising, communication and education.

Sport is an essential element of the culture around the world. As a growing social and economic phenomenon, it plays a key role in contemporary societies. This significance has become particularly obvious during the COVID-19 pandemic as measures prohibiting the performance of sports and on-site spectatorship have affected (and continue to affect) individual well-being as well as the function of sport in society including its health-related, educational, social, cultural, and recreational dimension.

*CFP* "THE USES OF COLOR IN US POPULAR CULTURAL PRODUCTION AND REPRESENTATION", NEXT ISSUE, POPMEC ACADEMIC BLOG

A dark urban setting scattered with dots of light. Yellow gas flames shoot up against a glowing red horizon, creating an almost hellish feel. Flying cars pierce the atmosphere, revealing the orange smog haze that reappears in urban sequences throughout the movie. As the camera moves closer to futuristic, monumental buildings, cold white beams of light transition to interiors dominated by blue hues. Sequences in the Tyrell Corporation are marked by cool tones as opposed to Deckard’s warm-toned private spaces. How would we feel and think about a cult film like Blade Runner (1982) if cinematographic choices about color had been made differently?

When we enjoy a popular cultural expression—be it film, graphic novel, play, videoclip, videogame, or live performance—color is fundamental to our perception and emotional response to the world it depicts. Whether articulated by means of costume design, mise-en-scène, or carefully structured palettes, color helps to layer narratives and convey nonverbal meaning across popular cultural media. Playing with hue, saturation, and brightness, color schemes have often become the main subliminal element that influences our perception and interpretation of situation and mood within the narrative.

*CFP* "THE STORY OF STORY-TELLING: THEORY, POLITICS, AND CHANGING PATTERNS", EDITED BOOK

"A need to tell and hear stories is essential to the species Homo sapiens – second in necessity apparently after nourishment and before love and shelter. Millions survive without love or home, almost none in silence; the opposite of silence leads quickly to narrative, and the sound of story is the dominant sound of our lives, from the small accounts of our day’s events to the vast incommunicable constructs of psychopaths."

Reynolds Price, A Palpable God

Indeed, Storytelling predates writing and even the formation of a structured language. Our prehistoric ancestors tried to tell stories of their lives by painting pictures on cave walls or rocks. With the development of language in a more civilized world storytelling became rather a collective cultural practice with the improvised narratives of impromptu storytellers at the end of the day’s work, which were then committed to memory and passed from generation to generation. They served the purpose of entertainment and spiritual guidance as well as that of recording and passing their views of the world and human existence to the next generation. Thus we find the myths and legends, folk tales and fables handed down to us through oral narratives.

*CFP* "NARRATIVES IN DISPUTE: EPISTEMOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO CONFLICT, PEACE AND SECURITY", SPECIAL ISSUE, TRIPODOS JOURNAL

The monographic is looking for contributions that offer epistemological approaches to the fields of conflict, peace, and security studies. The understanding of these phenomena is always mediated by who tells the story and the language used for it. As a result, in every context there is always a plurality of narratives that are produced by top-down analysis and bottom-up experiences. How these narratives interact, clash, accommodate and influence each other is of utmost importance to make sense of how international interventions and the deployment of security and peace policies are received or confronted at the local level, and in turn, how bottom-up narratives could be integrated and get a central position.

This call looks for critical articles –feminist, post-colonial, and/or critical and poststructuralist analysis– that focus on the process of narration and the actors involved in defining the script, as well as on intercultural translations by looking into possibilities of coexistence and tolerance.
