*CFP* "A LICENSE TO HATE: ANTI-ASIAN PREJUDICE IN DIGITAL COMMUNICATION", 3RD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE PANEL

A License to Hate: Anti-Asian Prejudice in Digital Communication

3rd International Conference: Approaches to Digital Discourse Analysis (ADDA3)

St. Petersburg, FL, USA: May 13-15, 2022

As reported, racism and anti-Chinese sentiments increased significantly after the start of the pandemic and have been directly linked to it (Vachuska, 2020). Disturbingly, over ¾ of Chinese Americans polled about their experiences reported being victim of at least 1 incident of COVID-19 racial discrimination online and/or in person, and over half perceived health-related Sinophobia in America and media-perpetuated Sinophobia (Cheah et al., 2020). Verbal and physical attacks on Asian Americans have been linked to racism and xenophobia deeply entrenched in the US society, and to the “us vs. them” worldview relegating Asian Americans to the bottom of the social hierarchy (Gover, Harper & Langton, 2020). Such feelings have been at least partly caused or exacerbated by the inflammatory rhetoric by the US politicians (Wu, 2020), and there has been evidence of ex-president Trump’s tweets to cause an uptick in anti-Asian verbal aggression on Twitter (Ziems et al., 2020). Researchers have analyzed the victims’ narratives (Satoh & Hata 2021) and even identified counter-discourses employing linguistic creativity to oppose hate (Zhu, 2020).

*CFP* "MEDIA AND CREATIVITY", INTERNATIONAL ONLINE CONFERENCE

“Media and Creativity” International Conference

London Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (online)

2021-11-27 to 2021-11-28

Nowadays we live and breathe media, minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour. News, television, social media, celebrity culture, music, and more. As the media and communication sector becomes ever more diverse and dynamic, and we are going to consume it, we also need to understand it.

Today, the new bio-technical forms of life produced by mainstream digital media and by a whole range of artistic and non-artistic practices confront us with unprecedented theoretical questions, which can be dealt with by combining profound and perplexing perspectives. We need appropriate theoretical frameworks in order to understand the phenomena.

*CFP* "TRANSITIONS IN TENSION. CONTROVERSIES AND TENSIONS AROUND ECOLOGICAL TRANSITIONS", COMMUNICATION, ENVIRONMENT, SCIENCE AND SOCIETY CONFERENCE

Transitions in tension. Controversies and tensions around ecological transitions

16 & 17 December, 2021

The conference will take place in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, and will also be held remotely on a digital platform, on 16 and 17 December 2021 - Conference website

This colloquium aims to question the discourses and communicational phenomena related to ecological and energy transitions - we explicitly use the plural to indicate the complexity of the object in question. The polemical dimension of the communication surrounding the transitions - controversies, polemics, discussions, debates - which mobilises verbal language and all other types of semiotic devices (notably still and moving images), is at the centre of attention.

*CFP* CALL FOR PARTICIPATION, BLANQUERNA SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CONFERENCE

Blanquerna School of Communications and International Relations

Ramon Llull University, Barcelona

October 7, 8, and 9, 2021

With a global pandemic and a world unsettled by profound transformations, we currently live a time of uncertainty, doubts, and opportunities. This conference invites to rethink the role of communication in times of disruption. Civil society, the public sector, and businesses must all face new challenges and respond to unforeseen trials.

The conference welcomes papers dealing with new narratives, communication strategies, messages, storytelling, and publics as they relate to the current and past elements of social, political, and economic disruption: the Covid-19 pandemic, the economic crisis, globalization and business challenges, domestic terrorism, the rise of authoritarianism, political polarization, and widespread protest movements, and insurrections, included the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, as well as current and historical protest/insurrection movements of the past in other parts of the world.

*CFP* CALL FOR PARTICIPATION, COMEDY IN CRISIS CONFERENCE

Comedy in Crisis Conference

Mixed Bill: Comedy and Gender Research Network

Birmingham City University, 14th and 15th January 2022

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, comedy (and social uses of humour) have become increasingly vital as a method of coping with adversity on both a local and global scale. Shared laughter can provide a temporary relief from the anxieties that continue to dominate a socially distanced existence, and thus bring people together whilst physically apart. In this context temporary humour communities have become increasingly significant. This conference will creatively explore how comedy (both in terms of content and industrial practices related to live and mediated forms) adapts and engages with times of crisis.

Although we anticipate a significant amount of discussion will look to recent events related to the pandemic, we also actively seek presentations engaging with wider conceptions of personal, social, political and environmental crises. We therefore invite abstracts for presentations, performances and creative responses on the following topics.

*CFP* "EPISTEMIC CONTESTATIONS IN THE HYBRID MEDIA ENVIRONMENT", SPECIAL ISSUE, POPULAR COMMUNICATION: THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MEDIA AND CULTURE

The aim of this special issue is to explore how a multiplicity of competing epistemologies interact and compete in the “post-Truth” marketplace of ideas in online popular communication. We invite contributions to a special issue on the intersections of popular communication, disinformation, and misinformation. We are especially interested in how popular communication can challenge and even upend traditional and inherited belief systems and knowledge regimes in religion, politics, fandom, and other institutions.

As traditional ideologies and other thought regimes collapse and new ones arise, recent scholarship has examined the contributions of digitalization and datafication of popular communication that contest older communitarian worldviews (e.g. Fuller, 2020). The internet has augmented collective understandings of the world but also undermined a broader sense of belonging, while enabling a new scope of contestation over “epistemic capital” (Robertson, 2016, 2021). In popular communication, especially, the social construction of meaning and worldviews is more manipulable than ever through disinformation, misinformation, and propaganda.

*CFP* "WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE IN THE UNITED STATES: LAWS, PRACTICES AND REPRESENTATIONS (19TH-21ST CENTURIES)", CONFERENCE

Women’s Suffrage in the United States: Laws, Practices and Representations (19th-21st centuries)

Université du Mans (3L.AM) / Université Toulouse Jean-Jaurès (CAS)

February 3-4, 2022

American women were long excluded from the electoral process because societal constructions kept them confined within the domestic realm. Actual enfranchisement was obtained after long struggles to achieve not only equal access to voting, but above all representation. While the adoption of the 19th Amendment in 1920 prohibited all gender-based restrictions on access to suffrage, it did not mark the end of the long struggle for women’s right to vote. It was not until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 that African American women were able to register to vote in the Southern states, where exclusion from the electoral process had been in place since the end of the Reconstruction era. Although the political heritage and principles of equality of the Six Nations inspired first-wave activists, Native women were marginalized not only by their fellow citizens but also by local and federal institutions. Even today, some women still do not have access to suffrage because of their social and/or ethno-racial affiliation. Activists continue to denounce and fight gerrymandering as well as voting restrictions (Sunday voting, early voting, mail-in voting).

*CFP* LLAMADA A PARTICIPACIÓN, II CONGRESO INTERNACIONAL COMUNICACIÓN ESPECIALIZADA

*CFP* "COMMUNICATION MAINTENANCE IN LONGUE DURÉE", A PAPER-BASED WORKSHOP

In the last decades, more and more scholars have claimed for an inclusion of maintenance among the key topics and key questions of technology (Edgerton 2007, Jackson 2014, Russell and Vinsel 2018, Henke and Sims 2020,). Communication and media studies have just partially included in their methodological and analytical tools reflections on maintenance (see Balbi and Leggero 2020; Weber and Krebs 2021) and this paper-based workshop aims to advance in this aspect adding another fundamental yet underestimated layer in communication and maintenance research: the longue durée.

Maintenance of communication infrastructures, for example, is a long-term process lasting for decades or even centuries. On the one hand, roads, networks and cables are constantly maintained to keep them functioning but, on the other, to understand their strategic relevance is important to adopt a longue durée perspective (Braudel 1958), since those channels of communication have often political, economic, and socio-cultural relevance. Sometimes, maintenance has a strong effect not only in preserving communication infrastructures, but also in modifying or even dismantling them. In long terms, communications can be radically changed because of maintenance and transformed into something totally different from what was originally to be maintained.
