*CFP* "EMERGING MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE TOURIST ENCOUNTER", SPECIAL ISSUE, TOURISM GEOGRAPHIES JOURNAL

This special issue examines practices, meanings and impacts of emerging media technologies: digital, mobile, geo/locative and augmented reality technologies within tourism geographies. The special issue aims to situate emerging media technologies within processes of the production and transformation of space, spatial knowledge and social relations within the tourist encounter. We ask contributors to the special issue to consider: What are the configurations of different technologies involved with tourist experiences? In what ways do emerging media technologies shape tourism imaginaries and experiences? What are the particular cultural inflections in the relationship between digital and tourist practices? How do broader infrastructural and economic conditions shape the relationships between digital and tourist practices?

Papers in this special issue will explore the unfolding contexts of media, digital and emerging technologies in tourism geographies across breadth and depth and may include the following topics:

  • Culturally and geographically situated explorations of digital practices in tourist sites (including empirical investigations into travel photography, virtual reality headsets, online travel writing, and travel vlogs)

*CFP* "INTERNATIONALISATION INTERRUPTED: JAPAN ON THE GLOBAL STAGE, THE ROLE OF THE 2020 OLYMPICS, AND THE IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC", RESEARCH WORKSHOP (HYBRID EVENT)

Internationalisation Interrupted: Japan on the Global Stage, the Role of the 2020 Olympics, and the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Research Workshop

Thursday 1st – Friday 2nd July

Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures, Norwich, UK

(hybrid in-person and online)

The Centre for Japanese Studies at the University of East Anglia and the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures invite scholars to submit papers for a special two-day workshop event to discuss the global role of Japan in relation to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. The Olympics has historically provided an opportunity for hosting nations to showcase cultural and political strengths as well as their unity within the international community. However, Japan’s model of globalisation has been seen as more inward-looking and seeks to enhance a certain self-image rather than global ties (e.g. Iwabuchi 2015). Following this, Tokyo 2020 presents an ideal opportunity to discuss how Japan’s global role and ambitions have developed in the contemporary era.

*CFP* "COSMOPOLITAN ASPIRATIONS IN ENGLISH-SPEAKING CINEMA AND TELEVISION", 26TH ANNUAL SERCIA CONFERENCE

Cosmopolitan Aspirations in English-Speaking Cinema and Television

26th Annual SERCIA Conference

Universidadde Zaragoza, Spain

September 8-10, 2021

It has become almost mandatory to start any piece on cosmopolitanism with a reference to Diogenes the Cynic (412-323 BC) and his famous claim “I am a citizen of the world”. Alluring as the phrase may sound to our 21st century ears, when uttered by Diogenes, it was an invitation to be a social outsider: the allegiance to humanity as a whole implied becoming an exile from the comforts of one’s place of birth and social group (Nussbaum 1994). Two thousand years later, Immanuel Kant considered that the achievement of a cosmopolitan order was a must “if the human race was not to consume itself in wars between nations and if the power of nation-states was not to overwhelm the freedom of individual” (Fine and Cohen 2002).

*CFP* "GLOBAL JAMES BOND", CHAPTER BOOK

According to David Bordwell in Planet Hong Kong (2000), “a truly global cinema is one that claims significant space” in film markets around the world (82) beyond a film series (e.g. IP Man), cycle (e.g. kung fu craze of the 1970s), or era (e.g. “golden age” of Hong Kong cinema in the 1980s and 1990s). While Hollywood is the only industry that meets this narrow definition, we question if a partial exception or even expanded demarcation could be made for the James Bond franchise given its long-term popularity, widespread cinematic influence, revenue generation, and cultural viability for nearly 6 decades or half of cinematic history.

As the Bond films have been released in more and more markets, the franchise has increasingly relied on audiences outside of the UK and US (such as China) for the majority of its box-office revenue. This was most evident when MGM contemplated releasing No Time To Die in November 2020 even as the cinemas of the UK and US were closing in response to the coronavirus pandemic. When additional countries began imposing restrictions that would impact cinema attendance, the release date for the film was pushed to April 2021.

*CFP* "CULTURES OF AUTHENTICITY", EDITED BOOK

Following the successful webinar series, hosted by Loughborough University this autumn, we are now seeking contribution for an edited collection on the topic of 'authenticity'. A widespread fascination with the authentic is said to have emerged as a response to the processes of homogenisation, rationalisation and standardisation at the heart of modernity. The concept of authenticity arose historically at a time of rapid social change and has again come to the fore where social, political, cultural and technological upheavals give rise to feelings of distrust, detachment and alienation against which supposedly authentic people, places and things are sought out for their reassuring certainty and value. Yet, there are huge contradictions and inequalities in who can make claim to authenticity and its construction and communication invariably involves competing narratives and oppositional assertions about what is authentic and how and why the authentic gains its value.

Thus, while the concept of authenticity has a long history, in recent years it has emerged as a prominent theme in many of the most pressing debates about contemporary communication and culture. In political communication there are ongoing concerns about misinformation and fake news, while the success of populist parties is often tied to their claims to be a more authentic representative of ‘the people’ than a detached and dispassionate elite.

*CFP* "WORLDS OF IMAGINATION: MEDIA, PLACE AND TOURISM IN TODAY'S GLOBAL WORLD", ONLINE CONFERENCE

Worlds of Imagination: Media, Place and Tourism in Today’s Global World

April 7th- 9th 2021 Online conference

Erasmus University Rotterdam

In today’s globalized, transnational and digitalized media environment, popular culture plays a significant role in the establishment and (re)negotiation of place identities and the ways in which people relate to physical locations. Traveling to film locations, participating in fan re-enactments or visiting theme parks are some of the varied and multifaceted ways in which the ties between people’s worlds of imagination and the real worlds they inhabit are made tangible through place. This conference highlights the interconnections between media, tourism and place and aims to bring together the diverse perspectives, approaches and actors involved in this process while focusing on critical issues accompanying this multifaceted phenomenon. We venture off the beaten track by adopting a decidedly global perspective and putting emphasis on the exploration, analysis and comparison of cases from around the world.

*CFP* "FASHION AND PHOTOGRAPHY", 2ND INCLUSIVE INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE

Progressive Connexions
12th-13th March 2021
Lisbon, Portugal

Due to th epostponement of this event in relation to the Covid pandemic, we are delighted to be able to unexpectedly reopen the Call for Submissions for the newly rescheduled dates.

In the early 20th century, fashion and photography were indelibly wedded through the efforts of a number of photographers, fashion designers, and magazine publishers. Once these cultural power shapers created the form, fashion photography took on a life of its own and became—perhaps always was—art. This art form has since been elevated to heights such that being a fashion photographer can be seen as very important chapter in many well-known photographers’ career: designers rely on them; models request them; magazines use their work: celebrities choose them for shoots; and the power they have to represent others is beyond compare in today’s, 21st century image-driven world.

*CFP* "RE-CENTERING CULTURAL PERFORMANCE AND CREATIVE PRACTICE IN POST-COLONIAL AFRICA. DIPLOMACY, SOFT POWER, AND SUSTAINABILITY", EDITED BOOK

Africa’s fifty-four states are diverse, resilient and rich in culture and traditions. It is no doubt that the continent has had its share of phenomenal events that have created a turn in its growth and development – the slave trade, colonialism, civil wars, military coups etc. Also, “the danger of a single story”, the shameful realities of African politics, and the social-economic experiences of many Africans have given the continent a negative reputation and poor image in the world. Among other things, the above realities have created a generalized evaluation of the continent which negatively affects the identities, realities and inter-relations of the African in international spaces other than own. Unfortunate examples of racism, police brutality, unfavourable visa regimes, and undue politico-economic influence on Africans or people of African descent are prevalent today.

Yet, African cultural resources and traditions are still sought after. From the tangible to the intangible aspects of culture including but not limited to the Safaris, cultural festivals, architecture, performances, and film industry. African cultural resources remain so attractive that even the return of looted artefacts from colonial times has become a controversial debate, especially in Europe. These cultural facts, artefacts and materials serve as a poster for the world about the continent. While this in itself can be problematic, it is worth exploring how such cultural performances and creative practices can be converted to become an enabling tool for advancing transformation on the continent.

*CFP* "COMUNICACIÓN Y TURISMO", VOL. IX, Nº 19, COMMUNICATION PAPERS

*CFP* "THE GLOBAL SOUTH AND/IN THE PLANTATIONOCENE", SPECIAL ISSUE, THE GLOBAL SOUTH JOURNAL

According to the United Nations’ environmental risk index, a by-country report on the effects of global climate change, the inhabitants, locales, and economies of global south nations will be disproportionally affected as global warming intensifies. Many of these nations are projected to be hit by a triple whammy: rising populations, combined with already-vulnerable economies and spikes in severe weather events will result in massive disruptions to livelihoods and cultural practices, as well as mass migrations as environmental refugees flee to more habitable areas. The plantationocene, defined by Donna Haraway as a way of drawing attention to the planetary effects of extractive practices, monoculture development, and coercive labor structures that have undergirded modernity and climate change since at least the 1600s, can provide a useful rubric for thinking through human-agented ecological change, especially as these changes unevenly affect different populations and regions. Furthermore, the plantationocene calls attention to the indelible ecological and economic legacies of imperialism including patriarchal and race-based hierarchies, and inequities among diverse peoples based on race, gender, class, and sexual orientation.  This special issue of The Global South examines the productive tensions created by the operative phrase “and/in” when thinking, writing, and living through climate change from the perspective of the global south and/in the plantationocene.
