*CFP* "HISTORIES OF DIGITAL JOURNALISM", CONFERENCE

Histories of Digital Journalism

A conference exploring the intersections of history, culture, digital technology and journalism

Budapest, Hungary: 24–25 June 2022

Although the shared past of digitization and journalism stretches back at least to a half-century, digital journalism history is a field still in formation. Building on the momentum of the recent ‘historical turn’ in digital media and internet studies, the aim of the conference is to bring together an interdisciplinary network of scholars to interrogate digital journalism histories and to start a global critical exchange on various approaches to and aspects of historicising digital journalism. As digital journalism has been re-configured by socio-historical contradictions of communication and complexities of its technological innovations, journalism scholarship should continuously strive for enhancing critical exchange to advance studies that intersect with numerous disciplines, theoretical approaches and methodological traditions. Emphasis of the conference is on the plurality of histories instead of one single digital journalism history, acknowledging diachronic as well as synchronic complexities of social relations, political contingencies, cultural traditions and power configurations between journalism and digitisation. Instead of enforcing one great master narrative, the conference aims to offer a space to embrace the co-existence of parallel, sometimes complementing, often conflicting historical investigations and narratives.

*CFP* "FIGHTING BOXING'S NARRATIVES", BOOK CHAPTER

Boxing is understood through a set of pervasive and powerful narratives that are insufficiently challenged in popular and academic encounters with the sport. This volume invites a multidisciplinary approach to respond to this dilemma. Analysing and fighting the narratives through which the sport of boxing is understood is crucial on account of the relationship between these stories and the formation of an individual’s narrative identity. In 1992, ethnographer, Loïc Wacquant, outlined the narrative misconceptions associated with boxing, wherein boxers are understood as: rugged, near-illiterate young/men/who, raised in broken homes and deprivation, manage single-handedly to elevate themselves from the gutter to fame and fortune, parlaying their anger at the world and sadomasochistic craving for violence into million-dollar purses, save for those who, ruthlessly exploited by callous managers and promoters alike, end up on the dole with broken bones and hearts. (Wacquant 1992, p. 222).

Almost three decades later, Crews and Lennox (2020) argued that these misconceptions remain and it is through the lens of these narrative myths that boxing is understood in the public press and scholarly studies. The narrative myths supporting boxing matter because they shape the types of narrative identities available to those who engage with boxing. They determine the value and stigma associated with the sport and its participants, and importantly, determine who is represented in the stories told about boxing, in the identity of the boxer.

Sport is an essential element of the culture around the world. As a growing social and economic phenomenon, it plays a key role in contemporary societies. This significance has become particularly obvious during the COVID-19 pandemic as measures prohibiting the performance of sports and on-site spectatorship have affected (and continue to affect) individual well-being as well as the function of sport in society including its health-related, educational, social, cultural, and recreational dimension.

*CFP* "MUSLIMS IN INDIAN CINEMA", EDITED VOLUME

Critical articles on the representation of Muslims/Islam in Indian films are invited from research scholars/faculty members for the upcoming volume "Muslims in Indian Cinema" to be edited by Md Sarfaraj Nawab and Asrin Khatun.

Cinema is one of the most popular mediums to connect a huge audience under the same roof. In India, folks have a secured emotion, love and dedication for movie-going. Beside entertainment, films have catered to the sense of a connectedness between people across states in India. Presentation of myriad cultures has always been an important motif in Indian cinema considering the diverse nature of lifestyles, faiths or existence of the people. And the consumption of an alien culture by a comparatively large concourse can possibly be imagined only through the silver-screen. Thus, cinema in India plays an important role in the presentation of certain culture, sect or faith. People feed on such presentations and shape their views about the subject. By keeping all these factors in mind, it is important now to address the Muslim Question in Indian cinema in such a time as this when a new and changing notion of India is on the rise. Where do we present the Muslims in the New India vis-à-vis their presence in the past? This book aspires to map and measure the identity of the Muslims as exuded in Indian cinema over the decades. It further seeks to trace the changes in the representation of Muslim identity with time. Well researched articles on movies are invited which might explore following themes/images of the Muslim:

*CFP* "BREAKING AND THE OLYMPICS", SPECIAL ISSUE, GLOBAL HIP-HOP STUDIES JOURNAL

Global Hip Hop Studies (GHHS) is a peer-reviewed, rigorous and community-responsive academic journal that publishes research on contemporary as well as historical issues and debates surrounding hip hop music and culture around the world.

The recent announcement of breaking in the 2024 Paris Olympics has stirred a substantial response from within and outside of hip hop culture. This special issue of GHHS is positioned to not only explore contemporary debates about breaking in the Olympics, but also to develop critical discourse that can offer insight to practitioners, cultural organizations and the IOC. We are especially interested in research projects that engage in local, regional and national perspectives and can provide useful resources transnationally for those involved in this milestone cultural moment. To this end, the issue will be published a year in advance of the 2024 Olympics in 2023.

Breaking’s introduction into the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic games roused similar debate within breaking communities across the globe, prompting concerns regarding the dance’s misrepresentation and possible exploitation. New tensions between breaking veterans, activists, the general public and corporate interests have emerged already in the lead up to 2024.

*CFP* "INTERNATIONALISATION INTERRUPTED: JAPAN ON THE GLOBAL STAGE, THE ROLE OF THE 2020 OLYMPICS, AND THE IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC", RESEARCH WORKSHOP (HYBRID EVENT)

Internationalisation Interrupted: Japan on the Global Stage, the Role of the 2020 Olympics, and the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Research Workshop

Thursday 1st – Friday 2nd July

Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures, Norwich, UK

(hybrid in-person and online)

The Centre for Japanese Studies at the University of East Anglia and the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures invite scholars to submit papers for a special two-day workshop event to discuss the global role of Japan in relation to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. The Olympics has historically provided an opportunity for hosting nations to showcase cultural and political strengths as well as their unity within the international community. However, Japan’s model of globalisation has been seen as more inward-looking and seeks to enhance a certain self-image rather than global ties (e.g. Iwabuchi 2015). Following this, Tokyo 2020 presents an ideal opportunity to discuss how Japan’s global role and ambitions have developed in the contemporary era.

*CFP* "CULTURES OF AUTHENTICITY", EDITED BOOK

Following the successful webinar series, hosted by Loughborough University this autumn, we are now seeking contribution for an edited collection on the topic of 'authenticity'. A widespread fascination with the authentic is said to have emerged as a response to the processes of homogenisation, rationalisation and standardisation at the heart of modernity. The concept of authenticity arose historically at a time of rapid social change and has again come to the fore where social, political, cultural and technological upheavals give rise to feelings of distrust, detachment and alienation against which supposedly authentic people, places and things are sought out for their reassuring certainty and value. Yet, there are huge contradictions and inequalities in who can make claim to authenticity and its construction and communication invariably involves competing narratives and oppositional assertions about what is authentic and how and why the authentic gains its value.

Thus, while the concept of authenticity has a long history, in recent years it has emerged as a prominent theme in many of the most pressing debates about contemporary communication and culture. In political communication there are ongoing concerns about misinformation and fake news, while the success of populist parties is often tied to their claims to be a more authentic representative of ‘the people’ than a detached and dispassionate elite.

*CFP* "ESPORTS: PLAYING ON AND OFF THE SCREEN", 4TH ISSUE, THE ERACLE JOURNAL

Electronic sports, or eSports, is the activity of playing videogames competitively. Strategic videogames such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, Fortnite, Starcraft, Defence of the Ancients, Arena of Valor, are played globally by millions of players. Even if the sports genre has historically been one of the most present in the world of videogames, since early experiments such as "Tennis for two", most videogames played on eSports tournaments create entirely new environments and set of rules that require prolonged sessions of play to be mastered. Players who attempt a career in eSports typically gather in teams, occasionally supported by external sponsorship, and engage in intensive and prolonged training sessions (Brock 2017; Kari and Karhulahti 2016). Professionally competing in eSports should be treated as a form of precarious labour, and investigated through the social and economic barriers that shape its communities and material conditions of possibility (Taylor 2012). At the same time, eSports generate large investments and new technical solutions.

For example, platforms such as Twitch have largely invested in the online streaming of eSports (Taylor 2018; Gandolfi 2016; Woodcock and Johnson 2019). Gambling in eSports is a rapidly growing business, projected to generate revenues of $1.5 billion by 2020, with obvious implications on the professionalisation of play in digital environments (Sweeney, Tuttle and Berg 2019). The League of Legends finals in 2019, had over 300,000 spectators connected live, and generated over $2.2 million in cash prize for the winners. eSports finals have been played in live stadia and arenas where traditional sports are usually played, but are also broadcasted on streaming platforms, thus blurring the boundaries between physical and digital environments (Miah 2020). eSports players engage with complex interfaces and in entirely unmapped territory of professionalism while doing real work in virtual environments (Scholz 2020).

*CFP* "THE LUDIC OUTLAW: MEDIEVALISM, GAMES, SPORT, AND PLAY", SPECIAL ISSUE, THE BULLETIN OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR ROBIN HOOD STUDIES

From the early Atari single-player arcade game Outlaw to more recent videogames such as Activision Blizzard’s multiplayer Overwatch, modern digital outlaws have long been popular characters in gaming culture. These characters often work to resist authoritarianism within their respective gaming worlds, and they frequently evoke much older outlaw representations, such as the Robin Hood of medieval ballads, by embodying popular definitions of justice and communal welfare.

This special issue of The Bulletin of the International Association for Robin Hood Studies welcomes papers that examine the specific ways in which enduring medieval outlaw tropes in modern games function as model responses to oppression. Particular attention will be given to submissions that focus on broadly defined digital ludic outlaws, though papers concerned with modern tabletop games, live action role-playing games, and immersive theater are welcome. Papers on early modern May games and festivals will also be considered.

*CFP* CALL FOR WORK: FIRST ANNUAL SMALL FILE MEDIA FESTIVAL

What do cat videos, facial recognition and porn all have in common? You can find them at the first annual Small File Media Festival!

The coronavirus pandemic is showing us how dependent people are on streaming media. Streaming media currently is responsible for over 1% of our global carbon footprint and rising fast.

Use your artistic voice to contribute to climate change action and cool down the planet. We’re going to make HD, 4K, and 5G look unnecessary, unsexy, and so last decade. Small file videos are intellectual, innovative, attractive, creative, and fun. We encourage you to explore experimental processes through low-energy technologies and deconstruct the fetishization of the pristine image.

If we can get together physically, the Small File Media Festival will be held August 10-12 in the beautiful cinema at Simon Fraser University in glorious Vancouver, Canada, and streamed in curated programs of tiny files. Selected works will be screened live and receive a rental fee. We will be featuring an “obsolete” media viewing platform for submissions with alternative technologies, and an anti-facial-recognition fashion show and workshops alongside the festival. Additionally, all accepted works will have the option of being curated and streamed online through energy conscious means.
