*CFP* "THE EDUCATIONAL DISPOSITIF", THEMED ISSUE, TMG JOURNAL OF MEDIA HISTORY

The growing body of work on the history of audiovisual educational media in recent years has also led to intensified methodological efforts to grasp the complex interplay between institutional policies, screening situations, and the form, style, and content of the respective media employed (be they magic lantern slides, educational films or television programs). In particular, the (heuristic) concept of the dispositif has proved to be extremely instructive in this regard, as it allows to map these different elements in a large variety of performative educational situations and describe their pragmatic interrelations: expectations, requirements, goals. Therefore, we propose to adopt the term educational dispositif as a starting point for a themed issue and define it as a variant of the “performance dispositif” of illustrated lectures that Frank Kessler expounded in a recent article.[1] Kessler has modeled the abovementioned set of elements as a triangular configuration of so-called poles – performance context, text, and user-spectator – that stand in an interdependent, pragmatic relation to each other.

At the same time, by focusing on the educational aspects of the performance dispositif, we want to open up a space for considerations that capture the specificity—and productivity to media and cultural studies—of the pedagogical issues brought to bear on media use in the classroom and lecture hall. On the one hand, this means engaging with the heterogeneous arrangements of objects, people, spaces, technologies, policies, and implicit and explicit norms that constitute actual educational practices, and the contributions of media within them. These arrangements have been the subject of nuanced considerations as well as apodictic prescriptions by pedagogues past and present (as witnessed in many guideline documents) and have recently become the subject of increasing sociological and ethnographic interest.[2]

*CFP* "COMMUNICATION MAINTENANCE IN LONGUE DURÉE", A PAPER-BASED WORKSHOP

In the last decades, more and more scholars have claimed for an inclusion of maintenance among the key topics and key questions of technology (Edgerton 2007, Jackson 2014, Russell and Vinsel 2018, Henke and Sims 2020,). Communication and media studies have just partially included in their methodological and analytical tools reflections on maintenance (see Balbi and Leggero 2020; Weber and Krebs 2021) and this paper-based workshop aims to advance in this aspect adding another fundamental yet underestimated layer in communication and maintenance research: the longue durée.

Maintenance of communication infrastructures, for example, is a long-term process lasting for decades or even centuries. On the one hand, roads, networks and cables are constantly maintained to keep them functioning but, on the other, to understand their strategic relevance is important to adopt a longue durée perspective (Braudel 1958), since those channels of communication have often political, economic, and socio-cultural relevance. Sometimes, maintenance has a strong effect not only in preserving communication infrastructures, but also in modifying or even dismantling them. In long terms, communications can be radically changed because of maintenance and transformed into something totally different from what was originally to be maintained.

*CFP* "CRITICAL ICT INFRASTRUCTURES AND PLATFORMS", 14TH CMI INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Critical ICT Infrastructures and Platforms

14th CMI International Conference

25 - 26 November 2021

Hybrid (Online / In-Person)

ICT infrastructures and platforms are increasingly pervasive and critical for societies, systems and organizations and for individuals. It is, therefore, of great importance that efficient and resilient infrastructures are developed and deployed and that disruptions of services caused by either cyber-attacks or other interruptions of services are mitigated. Also, as digital platforms constitute crucial communication infrastructures for societies, it is important that such platforms contribute to democratic processes and economic and social fairness. The 14th CMI conference will be concerned with these topics from different complementary angles: The development and deployment of fast and efficient communication infrastructures including cloud and edge technologies; resilience of ICT systems in order to increase cyber security and mitigate cyber-attacks; institution of social practices and governance approaches that will promote democratic discussions and processes, contribute to economic and social development, equity and fairness, and protect privacy.

*CFP* CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS, NEW GENRE STUDIES ANTHOLOGY

We seek to revitalize discussions of genre in media studies by providing a showcase for some of the most exciting work in the area. In this anthology, we ask the question of whether organizing our field around media was a mistake or not. Would we have been able to better confront and consider the many central debates and dead ends of media studies over the last three decades if we had started by centering on genre rather than media, or at least setting them up as equals. What other potential difficulties and problems may have arisen instead? New media had its moment; now it’s time to consider what new genres can do.

We are especially seeking papers on the following or similar topics:

  • New Genres across media
  • Non-Western Genres
  • Genres of the dispossessed
  • The culture, politics, and/or economics of genrification
  • Forgotten and misunderstood genres
  • Genre as embodiment and/or interactivity
  • Genres, historicity, and historiography

*CFP* "ORGANIZATIONAL IDENTITY REPRESENTATION ON ONLINE PLATFORMS", NEW ISSUE 2021, REVISTA ACTA UNIVERSITATIS SAPINETIAE, COMMUNICATIO SERIES

For its 2021 issue, the journal Acta Universitatis Sapientiae, Communicatio expects original research articles discussing organizational identities. Editors encourage approaches dealing with the definition of organizational identity, mapping connections and interferences of online and offline identities, the construction and representation of online organizational identity.

Under the circumstances of globalization, the economic and social actors are interacting louder than ever, and everyone would like to gain the attention of their environment in the intensifying communication noise. Emphasizing uniquenessand distinctiveness are common ways of capturing attention both for individuals and for organizations. There is a broad array of branding efforts made by organizations and public figures worth exploring. The online platforms offer a supporting space for the intensified multi-directional communication (OECD, 2019); the economic and social actors are striving to represent their identity in order to appear similar to the others and at the same time outstanding, original, and distinctive.

The issue of organizational identity construction and representation has grown opportune again since the spread of online platforms (Horowitz, Freberg, 2016). The online messages of organizational identity are effective forms of communication, and yet defining online identity from the perspective of different target groups, is a territory to be explored.

*CFP* "DEBATING ADVERTISING: ETHICS, EFFECTIVENESS, & CREATIVITY", BOOK CHAPTER

This book seeks to showcase current academic debates and multiple disciplinary perspectives on adversiting. The contributions in this book will help create a comprehensive overview of academic discourse on contemporary advertiting. Perspectives on the ethics of advertising, the challenges to measuring advertising’s impact, and the importance of professional creativity are particularly encouraged.

Proposed chapters might address whether advertising is purely manipulative, whether it encourages over consumption, whether it creates monopolies, or whether it serves primarily to make the rich even richer. Chapters might also argue that advertising encourages and rewards creativity, enriches people’s connections to their possessions and experiences, fills needs rather than creating them, provides society with good models for emulation, or offers genuinely aesthetic experiences. These are just some possibilities—we are seeking a range of opinions, approaches, and perspectives.

The book proposal will be submitted to the Palgrave Macmillan series “Palgrave Debates in Business and Management,” (series editor Anders Örtenblad) which looks for edited collections “taking stock of controversial and complicated topics within business and management” in refreshing and creative ways.

*CFP* "WHAT'S NEXT FOR MEDIA DEVELOPMENT?", SPECIAL ISSUE, JOURNAL OF APPLIED JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES

Media development – a field of practice and international cooperation encompassing policy advocacy, training and capacity building for journalists, the formation of professional associations, and the reform of public service media, among other activities – seems both timely and anachronistic.

What is becoming of media development – and how can it be reconceptualized – amid fundamental changes to the political economy of the media sector and the shifting of geo-political powers that have been foundational to the global media sphere in the eight decades since the end of WWII? And how can we make these interventions more effective by better linking them to context, building participatory engagement with local actors, and taking more gender-transformative approaches?

Contributions to this special issue are invited that offer re-evaluations and potential alternatives to normative views of media development and that explore strategies and pathways to media development that contend with contemporary challenges in the sector.

*CFP* "DESIGN", SPECIAL ISSUE, M/C JOURNAL

Between its broader sense of intent and that of making a drawing or plan, design appears to be expanding in both meaning and its application. Design is well understood when related to our material culture, where the medium often bears the imprint of the designer/s. Design has moved relatively seamlessly from the physical into the digital world. It makes sense that someone designs the applications that we use and that digital content, just as much as a poster, requires design. Design activities are rarely inseparable from a market economy, but the language of design has infiltrated business more broadly. Design processes are used in seemingly novel ways across business and governments seeking to improve their digital and real-world services. New usage related to users, perhaps unknowingly, replicates the interests of designers in the 1960s who sought a more equitable solutions to social problems experienced in the physical world. What loosely unites these disparate design disciplines diachronically and today is a shared sense that design improves the world we live in. But even with the best intentions, design does not inevitably lead to a better world. Our desire for stuff, and the social status this might bring, has helped to elevate designers into celebrities, but also heightened distinctions between the copy and the original. Design, either analogue or digital, has unintended consequences. These include, among other examples, the environmental degradation that emerges from design consumption through to the carbon footprint of the digital world.

*CFP* "OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR COMPUTATIONAL SOCIAL SCIENCE METHODS", BOOK CHAPTER

We are living in a digital era where most of our daily activities take place both through applications and computers. This causes the big data phenomenon which is an important subject for scientific research with increasing of available tools and processing power. As a natural outcome of this trend, a growing number of social science scholars are using computational methods for analyzing social behavior. Theories of social sciences such as agenda setting, selective exposure and two-step of information flow have been using as a theoretical backbone by many computational researchers. The methods of computational social science do not mean that a method is only executed on a computer – social science scholars have been using computers in their research for a long time. Computational social science methods in research are expansion and enhancement of the existing methodological toolbox.

*CFP* "FILM ON DEMAND - STREAMING PLATFORMS AND THEIR SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL IMPACT", SPECIAL ISSUE, STUDIA HUMANISTYCZNE AGH JOURNAL

Film and TV industries are undergoing yet another revolution today. It affects procedures, production companies, broadcasters, and other parties involved. The transformation is led and accelerated by influential streaming platforms and VOD services. Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, or MUBI change the viewing habits, offering subscription-based content accessible anywhere and anytime. The number of subscribers keeps growing year by year, and many consumers give up cable and digital television and settle on VOD. The effects of time-shifted viewing and new reception habits are becoming increasingly apparent.

This special issue of Contribution to Humanities reflects on the social, economic, and cultural impact of streaming platforms. We are interested in the way they change film and television landscapes, both in terms of production and reception.

We welcome submissions addressing the following topics:

1. Evolution of the reception practices

*CFP* "COMMUNICATION RESEARCH ON HEALTH DISPARITIES", SPECIAL ISSUE, HEALTH COMMUNICATION JOURNAL

The past year has witnessed heightened health disparities among distinct social groups which have been exposed and exacerbated by COVID-19. This global pandemic, in conjunction with other major crises, has brought challenges far beyond medicine and public health and is causing long term and devastating impacts. Socially vulnerable populations in particular are experiencing some of the greatest disparities caused by COVID-19. With the announcement of this Call for Papers, we ask in what ways health communication scholarship is producing knowledge and evidence-based practices to address health disparities and prepare for challenges to come. We believe addressing those emerging disparities in our ever-changing social environment requires multilateral collaboration. We encourage research involving interdisciplinary collaboration that could initiate meaningful dialogue and insightful knowledge sharing among scholars with different expertise on communication strategies to close social gaps enlarged by COVID-19.

This special issue seeks contributions on health communication research at individual, family, group, community, and societal levels in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic that has given rise to different types of local and global crises. Contributors are encouraged to embrace diversity in theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. We welcome submissions addressing health disparities caused by factors including but not limited to gender, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, ethnic and cultural background (e.g., BIPOC), educational level, ability level, and immigration status. Research from international and global contexts, including the Global South, are especially welcome.
