*CFP* "NATIONHOOD, IDENTITY, AND SPECULATIVE FICTION", BOOKS BEYOND BOUNDARIES CONFERENCE

Books Beyond Boundaries Conference: Nationhood, Identity, and Speculative Fiction

15th-16th January 2021,

Ulster University, Belfast Campus

'Culture is the context within which we need to situate the self, for it is only by virtue of the interpretations, orientations and values provided by culture that we can formulate our identities, say ‘who we are’, and ‘where we are coming from’ (Benhabib, 2000:18)

From C.S. Lewis to James Shaw, Northern Irish and Irish fiction is best known for its imagined histories, futures, and alternate realities. However, speculative fiction from writers of colour and ethnic minorities have been notably absent from the literary canon. While the island of Ireland has continued to grow more culturally diverse in the twenty-first century, there has been little engagement with how the cultural identity of Northern Ireland and Ireland has been transformed through immigration.

*CFP* "DIALOGUE-SHARED EXPERIENCES ACROSS SPACE AND TIME: CROSS-LINGUISTIC AND CROSS-CULTURAL PRACTICES", 6TH ESTIDIA CONFERENCE

6th ESTIDIA Conference

Dialogue-shared Experiences across Space and Time: Cross-linguistic and Cross-cultural Practices

University of Alicante, Spain

15-17 June, 2022

From the Socratic dialogues to post-modern cyberchats, it is only in and through communicative interaction that we can understand the world, people, and how things are working around us (Bohm, 2004/1996, Rockwell 2003). By means of dialogue people are able to argue for their viewpoints, to come to terms with each other, to jointly solve problems, and to resolve conflicts (Pickering and Garrod 2021). Dialogue brings together women and men, young and old, people from the east and the west, from the north and the south. Through the creative synergy of shared thoughts, ideas, and experiences, we can travel anywhere in space and time.

*CFP* "ITALIAN VOICES, ENGLISH TEXTS: DUBBING, SUBTITLES, AND CROSS-CULTURAL (MIS)COMMUNICATIONS", SPECIAL ISSUE, JOURNAL OF SCREEN TRANSLATION STUDIES

In Italy, as in a number of other European countries, American films and television programs undergo the process of dubbing. In the United States, however, Italian films and television programs are almost exclusively subtitled, and very rarely dubbed. Although American products have historically been much more successful in Italy than their Italian counterparts in the United States, things are slowly starting to change. In the 21st century, the success of Italian-made films and television programs in the Anglophone world has certainly benefited from the popularity of streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, whose platforms host a multitude of international releases. In both contexts, the intervention of professionals in the field of audio-visual translation is instrumental in facilitating the cross-cultural needs of these commercial and artistic exchanges. The processes of audiovisual or “screen” translation present distinctive linguistic and socio-cultural challenges that require creative and innovative solutions.

The Editors of the Journal of Screen Translation Studies (a peer-reviewed, web-based, open-access publication housed at the University of Connecticut) are soliciting contributions for their inaugural issue. We are seeking scholarly articles that examine the numerous challenges (technical, formal, linguistic, cultural, etc.) that audio-visual translators take on in preparing feature films and TV shows for international distribution, with a specific focus on products imported to or exported from Italy. Perspective authors are also encouraged to consider the political and commercial implications of this process. Furthermore, for the purpose of this volume, the Editors will consider contributions offering a comparative study of how foreign (non-Italophone and non-Anglophone) filmic products have been both dubbed in Italian and subtitled in English for international audiences.

*CFP* "DISCOURSE AND DISCORD IN CSR INITIATIVES", CONFERENCE

Discourse and Discord in CSR initiatives Conference

Université Paris-Nanterre, France,

26 November 2021

Striking the right balance between the moral(istic) discourse of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on the one hand, and how this same discourse translates into concrete CSR initiatives on the other, remains a conundrum that many organizations grapple with. Informed by specific discursive practices (mission statements, websites, press releases, etc.), “CSR discourse” has recently become a discursive category in its own right, which reflects the development of contemporary society and how companies adapt and are perceived by it.

How a company acts within and interacts with society has evolved from one generation to the next. Often cited as the father of CSR, Howard Bowen highlights the debate between “social responsibilities and laissez-faire” stating: “social institutions and organisations which are desirable in one environment or in one stage of man’s development may be utterly inappropriate in another”.

*CFP* "OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR COMPUTATIONAL SOCIAL SCIENCE METHODS", BOOK CHAPTER

We are living in a digital era where most of our daily activities take place both through applications and computers. This causes the big data phenomenon which is an important subject for scientific research with increasing of available tools and processing power. As a natural outcome of this trend, a growing number of social science scholars are using computational methods for analyzing social behavior. Theories of social sciences such as agenda setting, selective exposure and two-step of information flow have been using as a theoretical backbone by many computational researchers. The methods of computational social science do not mean that a method is only executed on a computer – social science scholars have been using computers in their research for a long time. Computational social science methods in research are expansion and enhancement of the existing methodological toolbox.

*CFP* "ANIMALITY AND TEXTUALITY", SPECIAL ISSUE, WORD AND TEXT JOURNAL

In “But as for me, who am I (following)?”, the second section of The Animal That Therefore I Am, Jacques Derrida contextualises his interest in a certain passage in Plato’s Phaedrus as a systematic interest in what he calls “the animality of writing”. Derrida diagnoses in the traditional anthropocentric opposition between the (human) ability to respond and mere animal reaction an echo of the ancient denunciations of writing as language that cannot reply back – opaque and mindless. In fact, as he demonstrates in Of Grammatology and elsewhere, the histories of the condemnation of writing and of the devaluation of animality are intertwined and feed off each other. Both are characterised as a deviation from the source of truth – speech and/or the soul – carried out by a certain embodiment.

In the current state of the increasingly institutionalised field of Animal Studies, the same opaqueness that was held against both animality and writing has been defended as a productive nexus in which to think about animals and their relationship to text. For example, Anat Pick’s concept of the creaturely, characterised by its focus on embodiment, has proved influential in conceptualising both animal and human being.

*CFP* “EMBRACING DIFFERENCE", THE BARCELONA CONFERENCE ON ARTS, MEDIA & CULTURE, IAFOR 2020

Embracing Difference
17-20 de Septiembre de 2020

IAFOR is very excited to be returning to the vibrant city of Barcelona, and continuing our relationship with the University. Barcelona is one of Europe’s most diverse and exciting cities, that has long been at the intersection of different cultures, religions, languages and peoples. Its rich intellectual and artistic traditions have made the city the home to writers, visionaries, artists and dissidents of all backgrounds.

It continues to be a place where ideas and ideologies jostle for position, conservatism and change, a place of questioning and subversion; high, low, popular culture and counterculture. As a city it has embraced difference and been forced to embrace difference like few others, and its long history and its present attest to, and contextualise questions of independence, globalisation and belonging, as issues driven by regionalism, nationalism and ethnocentrism play out in the city’s political arenas.

*CFP* "THE (ROARING) TWENTIES", VOL. X, SPECIAL ISSUE, CULTURAL INTERTEXTS

Cultural Intertexts started in 2014, as a result of a yes, we can kind of attitude. The name of the journal was meant to reflect the multi-layered textuality of the world embedded in cultures and embedding cultures in its turn. The first two issues came out at Casa Cărții de Știință Press in a single volume (1-2/ 2014) of 373 pages, with 23 papers on Literature and Cultural Studies, and 11 dealing with Linguistics and Translation Studies. They had all been presented during the 2014 edition of the annual Doctoral Conference of “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati, Romania. Six years have passed, and seven more issues have been added to the collection. As the tenth issue of the journal is to be published in 2020, we feel that it’s high time for statistics.
  • 6 years;
  • 9 issues, both in print and electronic OA edition;
  • 1573 pages;

*CFP* “TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE VARIATION IN THE GLOBAL CLASSROOM”, CHAPTER BOOK

Proposed chapter abstracts are invited for a volume entitled Teaching English Language Variation in the Global Classroom: Ideas and Activities from Teachers and Linguists. This collection is a follow-up to the 2019 Routledge volume Teaching Language Variation in the Classroom: Strategies and Models from Teachers and Linguists).

Like its predecessor, this collection will feature research-based and classroom-tested models for teaching the English language to students primarily in secondary school contexts--though proposals for teaching English in elementary and university contexts will also be considered. In this new volume, emphasis will be given to the teaching of English with a global perspective on language use. One type of contribution will be from teachers and/or linguists working in countries in which English is a primary language, who teach the subject within a global or world Englishes framework. *CFP* “DOUBLES, DUALITY, DOPPELGÄNGERS”, SPRING AND FALL 2020 ISSUE, THE MIDWEST MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION JOURNAL

Members of the MMLA are invited and encouraged to submit articles to the Journal of the Midwest Modern Language Association in English, Spanish, French, and German.  Please note that the JMMLA no longer accepts submissions on open topics: each Spring issue will be a single-topic special issue; each Fall issue will be devoted to papers building on the conference theme from the previous year. The current call for papers is listed below.

Please read the submission guidelines for additional information.

Spring 2020 - Life in the Middle

For this issue, we’re drawing on the organization’s midwestern roots to think about living, working, teaching, and doing scholarship “in the middle,” including (but not limited to) the American Midwest. We invite essay submissions for this general issue that consider what it means to occupy, exist, move, or migrate through middle spaces, and which contemplate themes of intersectionality playing out broadly across the realms of art, activism, politics, institutions, and cultures. While we are inspired by the middle spaces, or “flyover country,” that form our institutional home, we actively seek to build upon the connections linking interior or liminal spaces, and their populations, across on a broad, global scale.

*CFP* "PUBLIC RELATIONS, PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND SOCIETAL ENGAGEMENT", SYMPOSIUM IN PUBLIC RELATIONS AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS 2020

Public Relations, Public Affairs and Societal Engagement
TU Dublin, 27th March, 2020

Keynote speaker: Dr Lee Edwards, LSE

A clue to the principal locus of public relations and public affairs (PR&A) in practice lies in their names.  Yet the concept of public has tended to focus on corporate matters and stakeholders, reducing the focus on the societies in which organisations are active, on whose citizens they rely, and within which their social legitimacy is constructed.  The concepts of communitarianism, social capital and civil society are relatively recent words in the PR&A lexicon, and scholars are beginning to explore them as phenomena within the broad communications canon.

Increasingly, organisations need to demonstrate their fitness to gain societal legitimacy, and constantly strive to retain it.  Purposeful and mutually advantageous engagement permits organisations to enter into dialogue with society at large and the specific geographic and demographic communities that populate it, thereby facilitating the anticipation and addressing of publics’ preoccupations.

*CFP* "FICTION, NARRATIVE AND ART BEYOND LITERATURE", BARCELONA WORKSHOP 12

Fiction, Narrative and Art Beyond Literature
Barcelona Workshop 12
Universitat de Barcelona, 29–30 April 2020

The Barcelona Workshop has been the signature event of the LOGOS Research Group in Analytic Philosophy for over 20 years. It is a small-format conference, with no parallel sessions, that aims to provide ample space for discussion and informal interaction among participants.

Literature has so far played a central role in the philosophical debates concerning fiction, narrative and the cognitive relevance of art. This makes sense if one considers that the linguistic nature of literary works has enabled helpful connections between aesthetics and the philosophy of language. However, the realm of art extends far beyond literature. This workshop aims to encourage philosophical research on issues concerning fiction, narrative and art that have been so far mainly considered with respect to literature but are importantly related also to other forms of art. The goal is to explore whether the accounts developed starting from the paradigmatic case of literature can also be applied to other forms of art or if the latter rather require sharply different approaches.

*CFP* "DECENTRING THE AVANT-GARDE: LANDSCAPE, TRAVEL AND THE(OTHER'S) GAZE IN EXPERIMENTAL FILM AND VIDEO", SPECIAL ISSUE, PAPERS ON LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE JOURNAL

As experimental film practice is still the most prevalent in (yet not confined to) western Europe, North America and Britain, the special issue of Papers on Language and Literature aims to highlight the work of filmmakers working on the margins of the avant-garde, including those using traditional (8 mm or 16 mm) and new (hybrid) media formats, and the ways they (re)address the questions of landscape, travel and the other’s gaze. Although certain avant-garde films, including those made by Vertov, Bolotowsky, Kubelka, Winkler, Lehman, Welsby, Snow, Fischinger, Dutta, Rashidi, Takahiko, Frampton, Brakhage and others, have received some attention from researchers, there exists a number of underrepresented works, which use landscape and travelogue forms to challenge the hegemonic master narratives and undermine the image of majority groups and interests, continuously breaking the taboos and censorship of the mainstream (film) culture. Likewise, this special issue will hopefully extend the use of some recent revisionist theories, which have moved beyond structuralist-formalist thinking to incorporate intermediality and heterogeneity (Branden), spectatorship and (gendered) body politics (Lambert-Beatty), corporeal turn in avant-garde film (Osterweil), expanded cinema practices (Sutton), materialism (Walley) or personal registers (Kase), to the study of landscape and travelogue films, many of which clearly de-center formalist strategies.
