*CFP* CALL FOR ARTICLES, NEXT ISSUES, NEW CINEMAS: JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY FILM

New Cinemas is seeking scholars and practitioners working in the fields below to act as peer reviewers. A vital part of academic publishing, peer review enriches the discipline and improves the work of authors and reviewers alike. We encourage reviewers from diverse backgrounds and at different stages of their career to join the peer review pool. We are particularly interested in hearing from researchers in Asian cinemas, film theory and philosophy, and genres such as horror and sci-fi.

New Cinemas is a peer-reviewed journal aiming to provide a platform for the study of new forms of cinematic practice and fresh approaches to cinemas hitherto neglected in western scholarship. It particularly welcomes scholarship that does not take existing paradigms and theoretical conceptualisations as given; rather, it anticipates submissions that are refreshing in approach and exhibit a willingness to tackle cinematic practices that are still in the process of development into something new.

We particularly welcome submissions from those close to completing their Ph.D., Early Career Researchers and practitioners, especially from outside ‘Western’ spaces, as well as work on film beyond the text (such as festivals, technology and marketing). We also seek to publish research and cutting-edge thought in shorter formats than the traditional academic article.

*CFP* "MEDIA AND THE 'NEW NORMAL'", SPECIAL ISSUE, MEDIA ASIA JOURNAL

If you’re researching the "new normal," perhaps the normal thing to do is to consider Media Asia.

The peer reviewed journal is published by the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) and Routledge Taylor & Francis Group. Established in 1974, it focuses on studies and practices in journalism, advertising, public relations, entertainment and other aspects of media in Asia.

Manuscripts should analyze issues related to the media’s role in the “new normal” in Asia. These are some topics worth exploring:

  • “New normal” in the context of media studies (e.g., increasing role of the Internet, changing broadcast landscape, relevance of print)
  • Work-from-home arrangements of journalists and media workers
  • Changes in media production and distribution
  • Evolving media consumption
  • Marketing trends and the rise of e-commerce

*CFP* "MEDIA AND CREATIVITY", INTERNATIONAL ONLINE CONFERENCE

“Media and Creativity” International Conference

London Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (online)

2021-11-27 to 2021-11-28

Nowadays we live and breathe media, minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour. News, television, social media, celebrity culture, music, and more. As the media and communication sector becomes ever more diverse and dynamic, and we are going to consume it, we also need to understand it.

Today, the new bio-technical forms of life produced by mainstream digital media and by a whole range of artistic and non-artistic practices confront us with unprecedented theoretical questions, which can be dealt with by combining profound and perplexing perspectives. We need appropriate theoretical frameworks in order to understand the phenomena.

*CFP* "DISTRIBUTION IN THE STREAMING ERA", SPECIAL ISSUE, VELVET LIGHT TRAP JOURNAL

Over the past decade, the media ecology has been dramatically shifting with the advent of online “overthe-top” streaming services, the streaming wars that followed, and the platformization of the web. As the distance between big tech companies and legacy media players rapidly dwindles, rippling effects can be felt across industries, audience practices, regulatory frameworks, and more. Simultaneously, the rise of streaming services also continues to provoke further theorizations on topics that have concerned media scholars for decades regarding the asymmetrical dynamics of power and influence as it relates to globalization processes, representation, identity, politics, cultural and national mediations, and economic development.

For this issue, we welcome submissions that examine the impact that streaming services have had on the contemporary media environment. Topic areas can include, but are not limited to the shifting industrial practices, labor, audience behaviors and engagement, algorithms, content moderation, formal changes in the text, marketing, transnational/global flows, and regulation. Further, while streaming services may often prioritize rhetorics of disruption and innovation in their marketing parlance, there are also historical continuities that are equally important to emphasize. In what ways have streaming services transformed the way we understand film and television? What kinds of cultural issues continue to persist in spite of these disruptions? In what ways are disparate industries now converging/diverging and how can we understand these changes and analyze them effectively?

*CFP* "DREAM FACTORIES: PRINCE, SIGN O’ THE TIMES, BOX SETS & CULTURAL ARTEFACTS", SPECIAL ISSUE, INTERACTIONS JOURNAL

The essays will explore its multiple levels of musical and cultural significance, while critiquing the value of its presence as a commercial artefact and a signifier of Prince’s creative legacy in the context of previous posthumous deluxe edition reissues. Following Prince’s death in 2016, his estate embarked on a series of reissued albums and new compilations, inclusive of previously unreleased material. In its original form in 1987, Sign O’ The Times became one of Prince’s most critically acclaimed records while also being his second double album and a major commercial success. In this special journal issue, the 2020 box set with eight discs of music and a live DVD provides multiple opportunities for critical reassessment of both the album and its posthumous inclusion of rare and/or previously unreleased items.

This issue will explore the ways in which the box set has become part of a parallel Prince career which allows fans and critics to reassess his output and provides a new lens through which to understand the album as cultural artefact. With this central focus, the specific analytical angles will be left to the individual contributors, defining what they perceive as the key characteristics of this deluxe edition compilation and its comparative relationships to earlier catalogue reissues.

*CFP* "GENDER AND MEDIA MATTERS. WIDENING THE HORIZONS OF THE FIELD OF STUDY", INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Gender and Media Matters. Widening the Horizons of the Field of Study

International Conference

October 15-16, 2021 – Sapienza, University of Rome Sapienza, (online and in-person)

Although there appears to be an abundance of literature and opportunities available for discussion on the topic of gender and the media, «researching the gender-media dyad is still an important project for media scholars» (Ross 2010, p. 3). This topic remains significant for several reasons. First is the complex and rapidly evolving nature of media products, technology and actors. The current media landscape and its cultural dimension are constituted by the accumulation and juxtaposition of content, media forms, production and consumption practices, and everything in between. Stale and stereotyped images continue to exist, alongside more innovative and critical content created through processes of remixing, sharing, co-creation and contestation (Banet-Weiser, 2018; Bolter, 2019).

*CFP* CALL FOR PARTICIPATION, SOUND SYSTEM OUTERNATIONAL #7 ONLINE

Sound System Outernational #7 online

in association with Sonic Street Technologies ERC research project: Sound Systems at the Crossroads

12-16 July 2021, 4pm to 6pm UK time (BST)

Sound systems are currently at a crossroads despite the unprecedented explosion of the form during the last decades. Sound system culture has gained increasing attention from cultural organisations, the music industry and researchers. But the pandemic has been accelerating trends in both positive and negative directions.

In a positive direction online formats have been encouraging a new inventiveness and creativity in formats and content. A whole new range of opportunities are in the process of opening up for both practitioners and audiences and SSO #7 is part of this process.

*CFP* "THE FROZEN PHENOMENON", EDITED ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION

The record-breaking release of Frozen in 2013 marked a shift in the American animation industry and the Walt Disney Company as a whole. The film has been elevated as a catalyst for the third “golden age” for Walt Disney Animation Studios, restoring the company’s brand identity and ushering it into a new phase. It has also been praised for its pedagogical promise of change and reform of the Disney princess franchise, marking the start of an era characterized by strong, independent female leads that evolve around “richer, more complex stories” (Harris, 2016). Popular critics have lauded the film for improving Disney’s gender role portrayal and for providing role models that are more empowering and realistic for young women – or what American educational scholar Cole Reilly has labelled “an encouraging evolution among the Disney Princesses” (2016, 60).

The exchange of the traditional heterosexual fairy-tale romance for sisterly love was at the time unprecedented. Finally, from a business perspective, Frozen has set new standards for branding and merchandizing of the film's universe, music and popular characters. As the 10th anniversary of the film's premiere approaches, Frozen remains one of the most loved, recognizable, and marketed Disney films to date. Its enormous exposure and popularity calls for an exploration of itsinfluence on mainstream animation and on contemporary popular culture and society as a whole.

*CFP* "GLOBAL JAMES BOND", CHAPTER BOOK

According to David Bordwell in Planet Hong Kong (2000), “a truly global cinema is one that claims significant space” in film markets around the world (82) beyond a film series (e.g. IP Man), cycle (e.g. kung fu craze of the 1970s), or era (e.g. “golden age” of Hong Kong cinema in the 1980s and 1990s). While Hollywood is the only industry that meets this narrow definition, we question if a partial exception or even expanded demarcation could be made for the James Bond franchise given its long-term popularity, widespread cinematic influence, revenue generation, and cultural viability for nearly 6 decades or half of cinematic history.

As the Bond films have been released in more and more markets, the franchise has increasingly relied on audiences outside of the UK and US (such as China) for the majority of its box-office revenue. This was most evident when MGM contemplated releasing No Time To Die in November 2020 even as the cinemas of the UK and US were closing in response to the coronavirus pandemic. When additional countries began imposing restrictions that would impact cinema attendance, the release date for the film was pushed to April 2021.

*CFP* "CULTURES OF AUTHENTICITY", EDITED BOOK

Following the successful webinar series, hosted by Loughborough University this autumn, we are now seeking contribution for an edited collection on the topic of 'authenticity'. A widespread fascination with the authentic is said to have emerged as a response to the processes of homogenisation, rationalisation and standardisation at the heart of modernity. The concept of authenticity arose historically at a time of rapid social change and has again come to the fore where social, political, cultural and technological upheavals give rise to feelings of distrust, detachment and alienation against which supposedly authentic people, places and things are sought out for their reassuring certainty and value. Yet, there are huge contradictions and inequalities in who can make claim to authenticity and its construction and communication invariably involves competing narratives and oppositional assertions about what is authentic and how and why the authentic gains its value.

Thus, while the concept of authenticity has a long history, in recent years it has emerged as a prominent theme in many of the most pressing debates about contemporary communication and culture. In political communication there are ongoing concerns about misinformation and fake news, while the success of populist parties is often tied to their claims to be a more authentic representative of ‘the people’ than a detached and dispassionate elite.

*CFP* "VIRTUOUS VIEWING", SPECIAL ISSUE, FILM CRITICISM NOVEMBER 2020

Over the past few months, numerous streaming services, media conglomerates, film critics and journals, as well as academic departments, have published lists of anti-racist films and television shows to watch, or promoted Black Lives Matter watchlists and viewing queues. This phenomenon has altered what it means to watch, particularly in a time of quarantine, when cinematic spectatorship in the US largely a small group and private affair. Likewise, by connecting spectatorship to a political position, these lists present watching as an explicitly politically-aware act.

Watching films and television shows has always been political. But because many of these lists also make educative claims (to watch these films is to become informed), such lists assume viewers are well-intentioned but ignorant. Of course, the curation of moving images is not new and presents genuine opportunities for awareness, consciousness raising, and political change. And yet, these practices may also be cynical attempts to capitalize on a specific moment of work from home quarantine and political uprisings on the streets. Moreover, viewers themselves may attempt to signal their political awareness through social media posts and various other public markers in order to claim moral excellence.
