*CFP* "TRANSITIONS IN TENSION. CONTROVERSIES AND TENSIONS AROUND ECOLOGICAL TRANSITIONS", COMMUNICATION, ENVIRONMENT, SCIENCE AND SOCIETY CONFERENCE

Transitions in tension. Controversies and tensions around ecological transitions

16 & 17 December, 2021

The conference will take place in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, and will also be held remotely on a digital platform, on 16 and 17 December 2021 - Conference website

This colloquium aims to question the discourses and communicational phenomena related to ecological and energy transitions - we explicitly use the plural to indicate the complexity of the object in question. The polemical dimension of the communication surrounding the transitions - controversies, polemics, discussions, debates - which mobilises verbal language and all other types of semiotic devices (notably still and moving images), is at the centre of attention.

*CFP* "THE DARK SIDE OF ORGANIZATIONAL SOCIALIZATION", 3RD INTERNATIONAL AND INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE ON DISCOURSE AND COMMUNICATION PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS

The Dark Side of Organizational Socialization

3rd International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Discourse and Communicationin Professional Contexts

11 - 12 November 2021.

Aalborg University, Denmark

A main characteristic of late modern societies is the decline of the grand narratives of family, church, government, and nation. The decline of these narratives, as well as the authority of the institutions constituted in and by them, has left an open space, a void if you will. A void that seems to exert an almost gravitational pull on other narratives and other institutions, all of which are eager to occupy the space left open.

*CFP* "SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES AND HEALTH PRAXIS: GENETIC SCIENCE AND NEW DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES", EDITED BOOK

Tina Sikka is pleased to extend an invitation for an expression of interest for an edited collection I am working on with Bristol University Press titled, "Science and Technology Studies and Health Praxis: Genetic Science and New Digital Technologies." The details are listed below. Do let me know if you are interested and able to contribute, or if you have any questions (tina.sikka@newcastle.ac.uk). A formal call for abstracts will follow shortly. I am really excited about the collection and would love to have a contribution that reflects some of the interesting work being done by scholars on the list.

This edited collection invites chapters from a variety of fields aimed at the interdisciplinary study of the latest health (digital and genetic) technologies using a variety of forward-looking STS methods (the socio-technical, radical democratisation, feminist technoscience, new materialism, laboratory studies, radical/auto ethnography, case studies etc.). What makes these health technologies unique, and therefore demands study, is that they constitute an embodied and mediated health ecosystem based on neoliberal logics that promise bio-molecular transformations of who we are in particular ways. The book will be primarily aimed at scholarly and student readers in critical STS, race, gender, socio-economic status, sexuality and health studies. Each chapter will apply some form of STS based method, approach, or theoretical frame (e.g. case studies, ANT, controversies, feminist technoscience/STS, Indigenous and Postcolonial STS, co-production and co-constitution, socio-material analysis, ethnographies) within the following framework:

*CFP* "MASS MEDIA POLITICAL INFORMATION USES AND CONSUMPTION: ACTORS, CONDITIONS AND CONTEMPORARY PRACTICES", VOL 35, CONTRATEXTO JOURNAL

The 35th edition of Contratexto will address the issue of selectivity in the media use or consumption of political information as a persistently paradigmatic issue on the study of audiences’ behaviors and attitudes. The large majority of studies on the uses of devices follow on the empirical North American tradition, the reception cultural studies or French sociology, indicating that, since the eighties, media use and consumption has become a matter of increasing personalization. Long before that, Herbert Blumer highlighted the effects of individual and social experiences of interpreting media messages.

On one hand, the analysis of the audiences’ personal selectivity filter shows its multivariate configuration based on several dispositional factors (temperament, personality, gender, values, beliefs or motivations). However, it is also noticed a resignificance of those factors with the contribution of experiential and contextual studies that allow the location of specific appropriation routines and practices of specific audiences coming from different influence areas. On the other hand, the accelerated technological changes of the last decades reveal a power shift in the audiences’ position, as a result of their higher level of control and preference for a mainly self-referent exposition.

*CFP* "TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION", EDITED COLLECTION

Climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing the global community in the 21st century, and with its position at the border of people, technology, science, and communication, Technical Communication has a significant role to play in helping to solve these complex environmental problems. Curiously, however, Technical Communication (TC) research has remained relatively quiet on the contributions of our field to environmental action. This collection of essays seeks to redress this dearth of published research on environmental concerns in TC by engaging scholars and practitioners in a deep conversation about the ways that our field has contributed to pragmatic and democratic action to address climate change.

This collection seeks to explore the actual practice of international technical communicators participating in government projects, corporate processes, nonprofit programs, and international agency work that shapes global environmental action.

*CFP* "RADIO AND CATASTROPHES", SPECIAL ISSUE, RADIOFONIAS: JOURNAL OF STUDIES IN SOUND MEDIA

The new coronavirus pandemic paralyzed a third of the planet in just three months, imposing challenges on the authorities. Each country reacted differently, with more or less severe measures, ranging from total inaction to quarantine and lockdown, going through different recommendations for social isolation and suspension of activities involving urban displacement. With a total of victims that doubles every couple of days, the so-called Covid-19 is spreading at a time of strong circulation of disinformation campaigns, which question scientific knowledge, bringing risks to public health.

Radio plays an important role, one way or another, in informing and building the population’s knowledge about prevention and mitigation measures, in order to avoid a collapse in health systems, affecting mainly the poorest population. Due to its reach and agility, radio can be a powerful ally in large-scale communication strategies, assuming a leading role in times of catastrophes such as pandemics, floods, earthquakes, fires, tsunamis and other emergency situations.

*CFP* “TRUST AND DIGITAL PLATFORMS”, SPECIAL ISSUE, GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES JOURNAL

As online activities and experiences are increasingly mediated through digital platforms, a series of scandals and ‘public shocks’ (Ananny & Gillespie, 2017)have raised concerns about privacy and security, the misuse of user data, algorithmic biases, and the public distribution of objectionable and sometimes abhorrent content through the internet (Flew, Martin, & Suzor, 2019). Legislators and regulators in many countries are now engaged in public enquiries and the development of new laws to apply public interest standards to digital platforms, as First Amendment arguments about freedom of online expression and claims that the platforms are simply intermediaries are increasingly under challenge (Napoli, 2019).

This special issue proposes to view such questions from the perspective of trust. International surveys have documented a decline in trust in social, political institutions over time, including rising distrust of the media (Edelman, 2019). Manifestations of declining public trust are variously seen in the rise of populist political movements (Norris & Ingelhart, 2019), concerns about ‘fake news’ and ‘deepfakes’ (Allcott & Gentzkow, 2017), and scandals surrounding leading public institutions, from financial institutions and digital platform companies to political parties and religious organizations. Trust is a multifaceted concept, and important contributions have been made to the field from philosophy, political science, sociology and economics, as well as communication and media studies. To take one example, the concept of a public sphere rests upon an underlying degree of trust in journalists and the organizations involved in the production and distribution of news and information (Coleman, 2012).
