*CFP* "MEDIA EDUCATION IN AN UNCERTAIN AND POLARIZED WORLD", RESEARCH CONFERENCE

Research Conference on Media Education in an Uncertain and Polarized World
June 13th-14th, 2021
UIC campus in Zhuhai, Guangdong, China (possibility to attend online)

The advent and impact of COVID-19 has highlighted dramatic uncertainties in a more polarized world. Existing literature on the consequences of COVID-19 has confirmed the intensification of divergences of views and behaviours on various social and political issues, e.g. perceived risks associated with the novel coronavirus, concerns with the lifting of restrictions imposed by the governments and the use of news media for providing information about the pandemic (de Bruin, Saw & Goldman, 2020).

The uncertainties which persist and characterize the COVID-19 Era have brought massive challenges to the practices of higher education as a result of deepened polarizations. Such challenges are even more pressing to media education. On the one hand, the delivery of media education, which involves both the training and use of media technologies, has to address the academic effectiveness of distant learning and its social and ethical implications in a context of instability. On the other hand, COVID-19 has put media education under magnifying lenses highlighting how lack of inclusion and diversity persists in the university sector.

*CFP* "PUBLIC DIPLOMACY", SPECIAL ISSUE, ILLETI-S-IM: GALATASARAY UNIVERSITY JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION

Public diplomacy, which is the intersection field of international relations and communication disciplines, is an important concept that has been included in the political communication literature of the 21st century. The basis of public diplomacy, which is defined as the strategic communication management of a state for foreign peoples, is based on Joseph Nye's “soft power” concept mainly. Historically, cultural diplomacy activities started with the establishment of Alliance Française in 1883, and many communication activities carried out in the First and Second World Wars had the characteristics of public diplomacy activities, although not called as public diplomacy. The transformation of the propagandist communication form of the Cold War era with the new communication technologies of the 90s also has changed the concept of public diplomacy.

The one-way communication form of traditional public diplomacy has become a research-based, planned, and proactive communication method according to the results of the research in today's new public diplomacy. The actors and application areas of New public diplomacy, in which targeted messages are delivered to specific audiences, have diversified. “New public diplomacy is about building relationships with civil societies of other countries and facilitating networks with non-governmental parties inside and outside” (Melissen, 2007: 22). Civil society is one of the most important actors of this new public diplomacy and is an efficient tool for transmitting soft power.

*CFP* "COMMUNICATION HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS AND NGOS. QUESTIONS, RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES, TOPICS", ANNUAL ZEMKI CONFERENCE

Annual Conference
22nd-23rd April, 2021
ZeMKI, Bremen, 2021

Keynote speakers
Dr. Torsten Kahlert (Aarhus University).

The International ZeMKI Conference 2021 will focus on a topic that has thus far received little attention from historians of communication and media: the communication history of international organizations. Since the second half of the 19th century, for numerous and diverse areas of social life, globally active international organizations of varying degrees of institutionalization and scope, both non-governmental and intergovernmental, have been founded and have dedicated themselves to the global challenges of the first modern age. The most famous of these is certainly the League of Nations, which was established in 1919 as the predecessor institution of the UN.

*CFP* “GENDER DYNAMICS OF PUBLIC DIPLOMACY AND NATION BRANDING”, SPECIAL ISSUE OF JOURNAL OF PLACE BRANDING AND PUBLIC DIPLOMACY

This special issue aims to bring public diplomacy and nation branding in dialogue with gender, queer and feminist studies. The aim of the special issue is to chart new directions for research and policy interventions by engaging with the gendered dimensions of public diplomacy and nation branding. The editors are particularly interested in exploring how strategic efforts to create and manage favourable images of nation-states relate to the marginalization of ideas, bodies, and identities.

The call for papers follows the growing body of feminist scholarship and gender sensitive perspectives in diplomacy studies (Cassidy, 2017; Aggestam & Towns, 2019), motivated, in part, by a greater inclusion of women, transgender and LGTB diplomats inm Traditionally heteronormative and masculinized foreign service organizations (Aggestam & Bergman- Rosamond, 2016). This issue also recognizes the changing nature of diplomacy in response to the influence of non-state actors, digital technologies and transnational processes of globalization (Pamment, 2012; Zaharna, 2010).

*CFP* “TRANSNATIONAL JOURNALISM HISTORY”, SPECIAL ISSUE, JOURNAL FOR MEDIA HISTORY

Transnational journalism history acknowledges that cultural forms are produced and exchanged across borders. It focuses on the interactions between agents, ideas, innovations, norms and social and cultural practices beyond national boundaries, as well as the way these interactions affect the incorporation and adaption of new ideas, concepts, and practices into national frameworks. By moving back and forth between the national and transnational level, the connective and dialectic nature of these movements is emphasized. It thus treats the nation as only one level or context among a range of others, instead of being the primary frame for analysis.

This special issue of the Journal for Media History aims to critically interrogate and go beyond the national frameworks within which historical developments of journalism are generally studied. Due to its institutional organization and topical focus, journalism historiography has traditionally been confined to national boundaries. This holds true for studies restricted to the development of journalism in one country, like most press histories, as well as studies that take nations as units for comparative research.
