ComLoc 2021. XVI Congreso Internacional de Comunicación Local

Universitat Jaume I

*CFP* "MIGRATIONS, CITIZENSHIPS, INCLUSION. NARRATIVES OF PLURAL ITALY, BETWEEN IMAGINARY AND DIVERSITY POLITICS", XXVI INTERNATIONAL 2021 CONFERENCE OF FILM STUDIES

XXVI International Conference of Film Studies
Migrations, Citizenships, Inclusion.
Narratives of Plural Italy, between Imaginary and Diversity Politics
Rome, May 6-8, 2021

Confirmed Keynote Speakers
Áine O’Healy, Loyola Marymount University,
Igiaba Scego, writer and journalist,
Jennifer Smith, Head of Inclusion, BFI.

The global pandemic crisis triggered by COVID-19, on the threshold of 2020, also had a tremendous impact on creative industries, whose supply chains are kept on track, in Italy as elsewhere, thanks to mostly intermittent workers, with a weak social protection. While claiming an urgent recovery plan for the whole sector, we stand for a widening and broader diversity in the gamut of interested parties. In this way, it would be possible to respond to a global demand for participation, coming from groups that are scarcely present in senior positions and are associated with a strongly limited narrative. XXVI International Conference of Film Studies Migrations, Citizenships, Inclusion aims to meet this demand and return it in terms of analysis and operating proposals.

*CFP* "COSMOPOLITAN STRANGERS IN LATINA/O LITERATURE AND CULTURE", EDITED VOLUME

This volume sets out to identify and analyze current definitions of the figure of the stranger, as well as ‘rooted’ or ‘vernacular’ cosmopolitanism at work in Latina/o literature with a cosmopolitan outlook that runs counter to discourses that criminalize ‘strangers’. While necessarily examining the workings of xenophobia, racism, gendering and othering in that specific context, we will focus on the alternative processes of interaction, conviviality, and inclusive practices.

While the stranger is a long-standing figure, the defining characteristics of the figure are specific in space and time. All studies of alterity implicitly contain the stranger (i.e., in postcolonial and gender studies, and critical multiculturalism). Most markedly, the figure of the stranger has been foregrounded in spatial and urban theory (Young 1986, Ahmed 2000, Sandercock 2003). The affinities between the stranger and the cosmopolitan subject have been recently dissected by Vince P. Marotta (2010, 2017), who conceives the stranger as a social type, and argues for its importance in understanding the human condition and cross-cultural interaction (2010, 106).

*CFP* "MIGRANT BELONGINGS: DIGITAL PRACTICES AND THE EVERYDAY", 2021 ONLINE CONFERENCE

22nd-23rd April 2020
Utrecht University, The Netherlands
Online Conference

Migrant belonging through digital connectivity refers to a way of being in the world that cuts across national borders, shaping new forms of diasporic affiliations and transnational intimacy. This happens in ways that are different from the ways enabled by the communication technologies of the past. Scholarly attention has intensified around the question of how various new technical affordances of platforms and apps are shaping the transnationally connected, and locally situated, social worlds in which migrants live their everyday lives.

This international conference focuses on the connection between the media and migration from different disciplinary vantage points. Connecting with friends, peers and family, sharing memories and personally identifying information, navigating spaces and reshaping the local and the global in the process is but one side of the coin of migrant-related technology use: this Janus-faced development also subjects individual as well as groups to increased datafied migration management, algorithmic control and biometric classification as well as forms of transnational authoritarianism and networked repression.

*CFP* "DISCUSSING LOCAL AND COMMUNITY MEDIA: POSITIVE EXPERIENCES AND IMPACTS ON SOCIETIES", SPECIAL ISSUE, THE ONLINE JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES (OJCMT)

The contemporary landscape for local and community media – press, radio, television and online – has been undergoing constant periods of unprecedented disruption due to the challenges and shifts triggered by digital technologies. Technology displays more than a neutral role; it affects the financial basis and sustainability, cultures and practices of production and consumption. Innovative channels, platforms, ongoing interaction with audiences have muddled media professionals.

As Bob Franklin (1998) put forward in his book Local Media, academic appraisals of the local and regional media typically emphasise the declining number of local papers, their diminishing readerships and circulations, constant monopolies that tend to centralise media productions in large regional centres. Globalization, funding models (commercial, public or independent/grassroots), the insufficiency of human resources are often regarded by academics in this area. In his iconic Local Radio, Going Global, Guy Starkey (2011) enthusiastically defined local radio as “the sleeping giant”, baffled with concentration models and repressions, but still resisting: “a world-wide phenomenon”, Starkey asserted.

*CFP* "ORIENT YOURSELF IN THE SOCIETY OF UNCERTAINTY. LIFE PATHS AND TRAJECTORIES IN THE AGE OF THE NEW/NET/KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY", SPECIAL ISSUE OF THE LAB'S QUATERLY CFP

Recent developments in globalisation processes have produced an increasing precariousness in the labour market. The New/Net/Knowledge Economy requires a capacity for continuous adaptation to innovations following one another at an increasingly accelerated pace, and needs a “human capital” prepared to carry out work activities with the best possible results in rapidly changing conditions. In this scenario, competences have assumed a strategic role, meant primarily, even if not exclusively, as a set of resources that are acquired through practice and get transformed into useful devices for productive activities.

In the “Knowledge Society”, theoretical knowledge seems to be placed in the background, while skills are considered fundamental for overcoming the imbalance between job demand and supply (skills mismatch) and consequently for economic growth processes. Particularly, in the workplace, alongside “hard skills” − formal competences based on the knowledge of subjects − so-called transversal competences or “soft skills” are increasingly required. Non-formal competences, related to the social and emotional dimension, such as perseverance, flexibility, self-confidence, communication skills, the ability to work in a team, conflict management, etc. are considered decisive aspects in the workplace and more and more often school or academic certifications are of less importance because they are deemed of little utility in order to assess workers’ potential.

*CFP* “CINEMA AND THE CITY: INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVES”, 2019 CONFERENCE

29-30 de Noviembre, 2019

The conference aims to explore the relationships established between cinema and urban areas. We want to stress the connections woven between cities and cinema, films, fiction and documentaries – important unconventional sources for the understanding of social and cultural contexts. We intend to focus on the modalities used in films to tell stories – through images and speech – concerning cities, territories, and places, residents’ lives in relation to spaces, to buildings, to landscapes, as well as to its urban culture as a whole. The perspective we have chosen for this conference is interdisciplinary and cinema will be considered as a medium to be understood and interpreted in several, possibly comparative, ways. Actually, cinema, as a specific cultural artefact, expresses both individual and collective viewpoints mirroring cultures and hybridizations that can be explored by various disciplines and comparative perspectives.

*CFP* “UNIVERSAL ACCESS AND DIGITAL EMPOWERMENT OF CITIZENS FACING THE INEQUALITY GAP”, TRIPODOS, MONOGRAPHIC ISSUE

We invite all fellow researchers to participate in the monographic issue on Universal Access and Digital Empowerment of Citizens Facing the Inequality Gap. New Forms of Dialogue and Participation of Trípodos, the international scholarly journal published by the Blanquerna School of Communication and International Relations at Ramon Llull University (Spain).

Until very recently the global discourse and strategies regarding social inequality were directly related to, among other things, the gap between citizens in terms of digital access to technological resources and infrastructure. According to the most recent international reports, nowadays this has changed and, while the digital divide continues to grow and is equally worrisome, now the focus is on the use of technology. This monograph approaches the issue from a specifically Euro-American viewpoint with the intention to contribute to the analysis and discussion of the theoretical, practical and empirical research aspects of the issue, not just regarding the need for universal access to technology, but particularly the urgent need for a truly technologically empowered citizenship through digital literacy.

*CFP* “HOW SHOULD WE LIVE IN CULTURAL DIVERSITY? BUILDING SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES IN TIMES OF FEAR”, 26th NORDIC NETWORK FOR INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION 2019 CONFERENCE

How should we live in cultural diversity? Building sustainable communities in times of fear
28-30 de Noviembre de 2019
Valmiera, Latvia

Along with the extension of submission deadline till October 7, the NIC2019 Organizing team has an honour to announce the conference's first key-note speaker Prof. Dr. Dominic Busch -- a Professor of Intercultural Communication and Conflict Research at Bundeswehr University Munich, Germany. The title of his keynote at the NIC 2019 will be Intercultural Sustainability: In Search for Ethical Foundations in Intercultural Communication Research.

In his studies, Dominic Busch explores how ethical orientations of society are reflected in the academic research of intercultural communication. Following a discourse approach, notions of intercultural communication in research and practice is seen as discursive constructions. Building on these insights, Dominic Busch argues for a stronger reflection of differing ethical orientations, which influence intercultural research.

The 26th Nordic Intercultural Communication conference will be held in Valmiera - a more than 700 years old Hanseatic town located about 100km North-East of the capital Rīga. The conference language is English.

This time the overarching theme of the conference is centred on exploring cultural diversity and intercultural sustainability. The conference predominantly but not exclusively addresses the intercultural communication challenges and opportunities as illuminated, for instance, by international migration and diversity. Unfortunate by-products of these processes often are anger, fear, and societal division. The conference seeks to foreground the understanding of ways in which communities could be both diverse and integrated. The specific emphasis is on the notion of joint living in instead of merely with diversity in a variety of realms, including the practices of everyday interaction, education, policymaking, language and communication training, media, and so forth. Contributions from seasoned scholars as well as from students and practitioners interested in the various aspects of culture and communication are encouraged.

The potential forms of participation include individual presentations of either fully developed papers or work in progress, as well as panels and workshops. The participants are encouraged to submit their conference papers to the Journal of Intercultural Communication. This peer-reviewed publication is an outgrowth of the activities of the NIC.

This call for papers is addressed to scholars and practitioners focusing on but not limited to the following themes:
  • Culture, communication and civic participation
  • Building trust in societies
  • Methods and practices of communicating, cultivating, and negotiating cultural diversity
  • Cultural diversity in relation to education and pedagogy, training and management
  • Intercultural aspects of migration and diasporic life
  • Language training and cultural diversity
  • Personal relationships across culturally diverse contexts
  • Media, cultural diversity, and sustainable communities
  • Social policy responses to the turbulence of the modern world - values, action, and communication

During the conference, the 3rd ESPAnet Baltics annual meeting will take place. More about the organization itself can be found at this site.

Individual paper proposals should follow the abstract format of approximately 500 words (including the title and reference information). Panel proposals should also be approximately 500 words, including rationale, a list of proposed participants as well as their individual contribution.

The submission system is available here. Submission deadline is extended till October 7, 2019. We look forward to seeing you in Valmiera!

The 26th NIC conference is organized by the Faculty of Society and Science at the Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with Valmiera City Municipality and the Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation (LAPAS). For further inquiry, you are welcome to contact the chair of the organizing committee Liene Ločmele at liene.locmele[at]va.lv.

*CFP* “MEDIA INTERACTIONS AND ENVIRONMENTS”, MECCSA 2020, UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON

MeCCSA 2020
8-10 January 2020

Interactions with media are increasingly pervasive, woven into the textures and cultural politics of everyday lives. And when the spaces of our homes, shops, schools, offices and cities are so intensively mediatised, media becomes our /environment/, brought to life through our mundane, personal, professional, creative, commercial and ideological interactions. But what are the social, political and material implications of these media and cultural experiences and encounters? Whose voices and perspectives are included or excluded, and how is power and agency reconfigured, realigned or reproduced in this complex media landscape? The theme Media Interactions and Environments is designedto address this critical moment in contemporary media culture, and appeal to a broad range of media, communication and cultural studies interests and approaches.

*CFP* "ICTS FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: BRIDGING CONCEPTUAL, THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL BOUNDARIES”, AMERICAN BEHAVIORAL SCIENTIST, SPECIAL ISSUE

Community Informatics (CI) (Denison et al., 2014) and Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) projects focus on the appropriation of ICTs and the design of information systems to meet the needs of communities. Ten years ago, Donner suggested that projects are often developed “in relative isolation from each other, separated by regions, and by disciplines” (Donner, 2008, p.140). While this situation has improved, a better integration between ICT4D and non-ICT4D models is still necessary in order to better grasp the socio-technical processes ICTs activate at the individual and community level, and beyond.

In particular, this special issue will address three main issues connected with CI and ICT4D projects:

1) There is a dearth of middle-range theorization capable of providing broader interpretative frameworks for ICT4D (Sarrica et al., 2017). Indeed, cross-fertilization is needed between CI, ICT4D, and broader theories on ICTs, in order to generate stronger interpretative frameworks. Moreover, theoretical models and method developed in the ‘global north’ and for a ‘general user’ could be refined by their application to marginalised communities and in a variety of cultural contexts.
