*CFP* "FAKE NEWS AND AUTHENTICITY", INTERNATIONAL INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERECE

Fake News and Authenticity - International Interdisciplinary Conference

Online Conference

2021-05-20 to 2021-05-21

Since the postmodern movements such as pop and hyperrealist art or literary genres? new journalism and creative non-fiction – questioned the status of the real and the imitated, the concept of authenticity has called for a constant reevaluation. Walter Benjamin’s 1935 assumption that “the presence of the original is the prerequisite to the concept of authenticity” has been called into question with the corporate and advertising practice continually rebranding the concept of authenticity to suit mass consumers’ needs. Why is it then that within the contemporary culture the notion of authenticity is still heavily linked with spiritual awakening and happiness? To what extent do authenticity and individuality function as mere commercial products and advertising slogans? Have they over time become shallow romantic ideals or do they still hold the substance to be discovered and implemented into one’s line of thinking and living? What makes authenticity creatively attractive to artists, thinkers and spiritual teachers? Can authenticity be defined, measured, conceptualized in the contemporary context of relativism? Is it at all possible to separate truth from untruth in the world of fake news?

*CFP* "MEDIA FREEDOM IN ASIA: CHALLENGES FROM BELOW", SPECIAL ISSUE, ASIAN JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION

Advancing media freedom has been one of the megatrends in Asian communication over the past 30-40 years. Media space has been opened up by political revolutions and reform movements, television deregulation, the rollout of the internet, and demands for more choice and voice by hundreds of millions of better educated and more economically empowered citizens.

Over the past decade, however, this trend has slowed, stalled, or even reversed in several Asian societies. This is in line with a global pattern of “democratic recession” and “authoritarian resilience” observed by many analysts. The most obvious cause is the emergence of authoritarian leaders. However, top-down explanations do not capture fully the current dynamics. One striking feature of the state of media freedom in many Asian societies is the ambiguous role of the publics that are ostensibly the main beneficiaries of the right to freedom of expression.

In some settings, popular responses to state interventions range from indifference and apathy to active, partisan support for authoritarian leaders’ attacks on media. In other cases, the attacks come directly from popular movements. Religious and other identity-based groups may even be the main drivers of censorship and self-censorship, in societies where government control is less of an issue. Sometimes, in the absence of well-functioning independent media accountability systems, the public’s legitimate ethical concerns can result in interventions that obstruct the media.

*CFP* “NEW DIGITAL CHALLENGES OR OLD PRESSURES?” SYMPOSIUM ON POLITICAL JOURNALISM AND THE IMPACT OF THE NEW MARKET

New Digital Challenges or Old Pressures?
11-12 de Junio de 2020

This symposium aims to examine the effects of the /market /on political journalism in democratic societies in Europe, covering various national contexts with different political and financial circumstances. The measures of austerity that have been imposed either directly or indirectly on various economies in Europe and subsequently on political journalism are at the very core of what the symposium seeks to explore, as it aims to examine the effect of these policies on key areas, such as media business models, working conditions, new regulations, and perceptions of journalistic identity.

The symposium poses the question of whether the current challenges are a result of the digitization and the inclusion of a variety of platforms in the media ecology, that directly affected the economic media models across Europe, or whether these challenges reflect established market mechanisms.

*CFP* "FREEDOM", ISSUE IV, NUART JOURNAL

Following the successful international launch of Issues I, II and III of Nuart Journal, we are now calling for submissions for Issue IV.

The theme for our next issue is Freedom. In Europe and internationally, we are witnessing an historical moment where our collective rights are under threat. We are calling for submissions dealing with ideas related to freedom, democracy, and our rights to public space – freedom of artistic expression, freedom of movement, freedom from harassment, violence, and arrest.

Street art is a radically democratic art form with the capacity to stimulate conversations about freedom and democracy – and to bring together artists, academics and photographers working creatively with these themes. Street art is arguably the world’s most democratic art form and a barometer of communities’ hopes and dreams. Artists working in public space tend to respond immediately to political issues, and the art on our cities’ streets powerfully reflects both our communities’ anxieties about, and aspirations for, our collective future.

*CFP* "HUMAN RIGHTS IN TURKEY: A FADING SHADOW OF DEMOCRACY", CHAPTER BOOK

Over the last several decades, Turkey has been confronted with the anti-democratic practices of its government. The country has been unable to resolve critical issues regarding and affecting the rights of the nation’s various minority ethnic groups, those who hold beliefs and ideologies different from the mainstream and the sanctioned or deal with issues of gender, which are main concerns of human rights defenders (Langley, 2002). Even though in the early 2000s, Turkey took several critical steps in the name of democratization as a result of its desire to join the European Union, this progress was not sustained. The country advertised its goals as increasing democratic values, integrating laws with European standards, increasing the prosperity of her citizens, and showing concern for the general welfare of Turkish society. During this period, Turkey achieved considerable progress and became recognized as one of the most successful countries in the world in decreasing human right violations and promoting democratic values (Abramowitz, 2018). Such progress ended as the politicians could not find their way to unite the country’s differing interests into a politically cohesive whole. Under the current government, in fact, Turkish society has become more polarized than ever before under an autocratic regime that has brought a halt to the democratic transformation.
