*CFP* "HISTORY OF DIGITAL MEDIA AND DIGITAL MEDIA HISTORIOGRAPHY", ECREA COMMUNICATION HISTORY SECTION WORKSHOP

History of Digital Media and Digital Media Historiography

A ECREA Communication History Section Workshop

co-sponsored by the ICA Communication History Division

Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH), University of Luxembourg

Luxembourg, 2-4 February 2022

The digital turn has had a transformative effect on all media, and it has also influenced the way in which media and communication history is shaped, written and disseminated. First, it has had an impact in terms of devices, distribution, production and content, as well as access and participation. Looking at these changes with the lenses of history is beneficial, because it helps contextualizing “revolutions” and continuities with the past. Consequently, the history of digital media can be seen as a new label for media histories related to digital politics, economics, technologies and cultures shaped by digitalisation. But it also deals with analogue media which have been digitised or have resisted digitisation is a new and relevant field.

*CFP* "BEYOND THE WHITE HOUSE: THE FIRST LADY IN FILM, FICTION, AND CULTURE", EDITED COLLECTION

This edited collection seeks to explore the representation of the First Lady in a range of different texts and media. The collection aims to examine the President’s wife in a purely cultural context by investigating the ways in which she has been represented, embodied, characterised and commemorated in film, fiction, memoir, photography and portraiture, television, theatre, education, museum studies, fashion, and social media. Beyond the White House is an original work that makes use of cultural interpretation to reconfigure the figure of the First Lady as a culturally authoritative individual possessing the ability to sway, change, inspire, and manipulate public attention and opinion. Moving away from biographies and histories, this is the first volume of its kind to consider the representation of the First Lady figure through the prism of popular culture - and therefore consider her impact upon ‘cultural politics’ - and the first to regard her as a strategically important socio-cultural figure.

Removed from the patriarchal hierarchy of White House politics and expectations, the First Lady emerges as a force of her own; she subtly carves out cultural agency and gender identity despite her (in)visibility in the public eye. Simply by being the ‘First Lady of the United States’ she possesses what MaryAnne Borrelli has labelled the “performance of descriptive representation” (Women and the White House: 229). The relationship between the woman and the office is paramount; the existence of the title ‘First Lady’ permits popular culture to tolerate or reject not only political and cultural manoeuvring, but also issues of gender, race, self, location, fashion, identity, satire, memory, authority, and even pedagogy. The office of the First Lady is what the woman makes it, and Beyond the White House she has become a commanding cultural icon.

*CFP* "PORNOGRAPHY AS A CULTURE: A LOCAL PERSPECTIVE", SPECIAL ISSUE, GENDER/SEXUALITY/ITALY JOURNAL

This themed section seeks to examine pornography as a nexus of practices, knowledges, institutions, and economies primarily concerned with bodily pleasure. It considers pornography as a rich cultural field: a terrain on which is staged an ongoing struggle over the politics of representation, the social legitimacy, and the cultural visibility of desires, bodies and intimacies. Pornography has long been the object of censorship, surveillance and intense political critique. Once primarily associated with exploitative sexual practices and oppressive ideas about gender roles, it has now become a central sphere of intervention for queer and feminist activists, and for radical political work. Within pornography, consumption practices often intersect with participatory spheres of culture production and community-making dynamics. This intersection tests the thin line between social practice, representation and fantasy within which porn operates as a cultural and media domain.

In Italy, pornography first emerged as a noteworthy cultural phenomenon in the mid-1970s, with the proliferation of adult magazines and the first hard-core films by directors like Joe D’Amato. In the 1980s, Italian media (print, cinema, and intermittently even television) were flooded with sexually explicit images, the production and circulation of pornographic materials paralleling and sometimes exceeding the exploits of North-European countries such as France or Germany. During this time, a significant process of deregulation and legitimization of sexually explicit materials transformed what had largely been seen as a predominantly Catholic country prone to censorship into a libertarian paradise for pornographers and their publics.

*CFP* "RACIALIZING MEDIA POLICY", BOOK CHAPTER

Racialization is a term used within the social sciences to highlight the ways that social interactions become racial. This is an important concept in sociological and political science research when looking at structural mechanisms that perpetuate racial inequalities. The state, and its various organizational spaces of action, is often seen as a site for race to be enacted (e.g., Bracey 2015). Public policy sectors such as housing, taxation, and immigration, to name a few, have been ripe areas of research. However, media policy research has not effectively engaged with this critical conception. Media policy research has been driven by political economy perspectives within the field of Communications and Media Studies, and can benefit from an approach that analyzes it in relation to social science perspectives that focus on processes which constitute, or are constituted by, actors, groups, and organizations.

Racializing Media Policy seeks to fill this scholarly gap by providing case studies which focus on media policy issues in the United States through the lens of racialization. It will contribute to a growing body of media policy research within the Communications and Media Studies literature, as well as anchor the role of media policy in Sociological research – where it is lacking. It would also lend itself toward a growing body of work in the Sociology of Organizations which have begun to focus on “raced organizations” (Ray 2019; Wooten 2019) to understand how racial inequalities are embedded within organizational practices. The volume is under contract with the Emerald series ‘Studies in Media and Communications.’ The series is sponsored by the Communication, Information Technologies, and Media Sociology section of the American Sociological Association.

*CFP* "MEDIA AND THE EU GOVERNANCE. DEMOCRACY, PARTICIPATION, AND INNOVATION", SPECIAL ISSUE 2022, EUROPEAN AND GLOBAL STUDIES JOURNAL

While the European Union (EU) has become increasingly crucial for the life and the work of its 450M citizens, the European integration process itself has historically been characterized by cyclical crises. While looking back, it is clear that economic and political tensions have previously opened new opportunities for widening and deepening the EU's integration. The present crisis seems different. A long-term falling trend of public trust in national and EU institutions has been undermining the European integration process and more recently “citizen dissatisfaction with national governments and disaffection from the EU has been on the rise” (Schmidt, 2015, p.57). The EU has had to face a long-lasting economic crisis, accompanied by the rise of populist and anti-EU parties that have been present in the European Parliament since the last two legislatures. Today, and on top of the political crisis described earlier, for the first time in the history of the EU, an unexpected force of disruption, such as the health crisis caused by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, has contributed to create an unprecedented critical situation for the European Union.

Aware of this epochal conjuncture, European leaders and Policy Makers have called for "The Future of Europe'' conference. This Conference should help to address the crisis openly, enlarge the participation of European citizens in European governance, and ultimately define the fundamental values and principles that have shaped the European communities, whose building “has always been plagued by uncertainty” (Williams, 2009, p.551). Following the delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, the debate is now restarting with renewed energies.

*CFP* "THE HANDBOOK OF APPLIED JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES: INVESTIGATING JOURNALISM PRACTICE ACROSS REGIONS AND CULTURES", BOOK CHAPTER

Leon Barkho (Jönköping University, Sweden) and Jairo Lugo-Ocando (Northwestern University, Qatar) welcome chapter submission to their forthcoming companion on journalism studies titled: “The Handbook of Applied Journalism and Media Studies - Investigating Journalism Practice Across Regions and Cultures”.

Following the submission of a detailed proposal, they have obtained the greenlight from Intellect Books, to compile the handbook, a monumental work of about 50 chapters. At this stage, we are seeking an abstract of about 250 to 300 words to be submitted to us by the end of May. The handbook focuses on the question of how we can render our collective knowledge of journalism as a discipline and the mass of scholarly literature on the subject useful, practical, and relevant to those practicing journalism across regions and cultures.

The edited handbook also welcomes contributions on any of the following key topics with emphasis preferably placed on own country, region, or culture:

1. Interlink between journalism as scholarship and Journalism as practice:

*CFP* "MEDIA BUILDING: ARCHITECTURE, COMMUNICATIONS AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT", VIRTUAL CONFERENCE

Media Building: Architecture, Communications and the Built Environment

Virtual Conference, 7-10 July 2021

Hosted by the University of Salford and Northumbria University

Since the emergence of the first newspapers, the relationship between place and content has been central to the media’s development. The spatial politics of media production could fundamentally shape its reception and circulation. If ‘the medium is the message’, then this applied equally to where media artefacts were created as to what was contained within them. Publishers quickly understood that, from both a commercial and philosophical perspective, landmark headquarters or publishing plants could help enforce the legitimacy and significance of their enterprises. Thus, structures such as the striking neo-gothic spires of the Chicago Tribune tower or the sleek art-deco exteriors of the Daily Express building in London offered compelling expressions of media power, modernity, and the aesthetics of mass communication, providing what Aurora Wallace describes as a “definable shape…a hook on which to hang some news about the media itself.” At the same time, media buildings became key nodes in the urban geography of communications, complementing editorial efforts to make and remake the modern metropolis.

*CFP* "COMMUNICATING HEALTH AND PANDEMICS IN AFRICA: THEORY, PRACTICED, AND GUIDELINES", BOOK CHAPTER

The rapid spread of the SARs-COV 2, or novel coronavirus, the causative agent of COVID-19, from the City of Wuhan in China in late 2019, has wrought a lot of anxiety and economic downturn in the world. Political tempers have flared up with the West, led by the US, accusing China of deliberately releasing the virus into the world or covering it up until the infection reached pandemic levels. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been accused of being complicit in China's 'hiding' of the coronavirus.

This West versus East (China) 'conflict' has led to a lack of international agreements on a common approach to eliminating the virus. Russia, China, the US, Germany, France, Australia, and the UK are all working on their candidate vaccines. When Russia announced its Sputnik 5 vaccine release, the West was skeptical, but China and other sympathizers of Russia either overtly or silently managed the news. Then, by December 2020, Pfizer and Moderna had announced they had an effective vaccine. January 11, 2021, Pfizer announced it can quickly develop vaccines for future Covid-19 variants, fueling suspicions that a world order ordained by the Rockefeller Foundation, per its website, put in place in 2010 an assimilated plan to reduce the world population, annihilate the African population, and strain the global economy. However, media reports show that a densely populated Africa has so far recorded less than 50,000 deaths, whereas, as USA Today reports, health experts had forecasted that African health care systems would be overwhelmed as cases of COVID-19 escalated, and deaths exceeded 300,000 to nearly 3 million.

*CFP* "THE ARABIC PRESS PUBLISHED OUTSIDE THE ARAB WORLD: CONTEXT EFFECTS ON AN ALLOPHONE PRESS", SPECIAL AUTUMN/WINTER 2021 ISSUE, REVUE DES MONDES MUSULMANS ET DE LA MÉDITERRANEÉ

This call for papers concerns the Arabic press published outside the Arab world. It includes all periodical publications (daily newspapers and reviews) published in Arabic in countries where this language is not one of the dominant languages.

For the needs of this call for papers, we will use the expression « the Arabic press ». However, this press is not a homogeneous entity. It is, in fact, heterogenous and displays multiple contents arising in multiple temporalities and contexts, but also the result of the various paths followed by its instigators (Arabs or Arabists), their motivations, as well as the evolving status of the Arabic language. This diversity is also linked to the different locations of this press and the relationships that these contexts maintain with both the Arab area and the Arab diasporic communities. Thus, the central elements of our thinking reflect the interactions that this Allophone press maintains with the social, political and cultural configurations in which it operates.

Very little research has been devoted to this press in France and elsewhere. In general, the works that examine this research object are case studies that focus on one or another specific publication. Most of the in-depth work concerns the content of specific titles and fails to take into consideration the general mapping of this type of publication.

*CFP* "PERIODICALS AND SILENT CINEMA", SPECIAL EDITION, JOURNAL OF MODERN PERIODICAL STUDIES

Submissions are solicited for a special edition of the Journal of Modern Periodical Studies on the relationship between periodicals and silent cinema. Work is encouraged which treats the topic in its global, as well as Anglophone, context.

The rise of silent cinema in the early twentieth century changed the business of writing and publishing forever. Editors, journalists, essayists and authors found themselves catering for readers whose cultural expectations had been transformed by their interactions with cinema. Debates raged over which periodical form would first be rendered obsolete: the daily newspaper? The illustrated magazine? The serialised novel? The weekly comic? The compendium of short fiction?

In fact cinema would effectively devour, not destroy, them all and reconstitute a new, globalised culture industry by breaking the established power of nineteenth-century publishing models, by fragmenting readerships and establishing new modes of celebrity and fandom. The scope of these transformations was dramatic and have been as yet underexplored in existing periodicals scholarship.

*CFP* CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS, 2020/2021 ISSUES, KOME JOURNAL

KOME, an international Open Access journal published by the Hungarian Communication Studies Association is currently seeking articles for its 2020 and 2021 issues.

KOME is a theory and pure research-oriented journal of communication studies and related fields. Theoretical researches and discussions that help to understand better, or reconceptualize the understanding of communication or the media are its center of interests; being either an useful supplement to, or a reasonable alternative to current models and theories. Given the connection between theory and empirical research, we are open to submissions of empirical papers if the research demonstrates a clear endorsement of communication and/or media theories. KOME is also committed to the ideas of trans- and interdisciplinarity and prefer topics that are relevant for more than one special discipline of social sciences.

KOME is currently ranked Q1 in Linguistics and Language and Q2 in Communication by the Scimago Journal & Country rank, based on SCOPUS data. All submission undergo double blind peer review. Average turnaround time for the first round evaluation reports is 8 to 10 weeks. No APC's, page charges, submission charges; we do not charge authors for publishing their work and do not solicit or accept payment for contributions.

*CFP* "TRANSLATION, REMEDIATION, SPREAD: THE GLOBAL CIRCULATION OF COMICS IN DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION", SPECIAL COLLECTION, THE COMICS GRID: JOURNAL OF COMIC SCHOLARSHIP

This Special Collection of The Comics Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship will focus on the global circulation of comics in digital forms, from webcomics to subscription services from traditional comics publishers. The Collection’s emphasis will be on the international, multi-lingual, multi-format, diverse nature of “comics”. Comics have circulated in their original language and in translation since the inception of print: as a physical object, comics (including strips in newspapers) can travel across international borders with their readers, or they can be translated for publication in new locales. Recent technologies have made digital distribution possible, theoretically allowing for global access to comics published online anywhere in the world as well as the possibility of distributing translated versions within a proprietary system.

Translation is central to the global circulation of comics and comics as an art form are often experienced in translation (Evans 2017).  While there is a growing body of work on the translation and circulation of comics (Zanettin 2008, Altenberg and Owen 2015, Mälzer 2015, Reyns-Chikuma and Tarif 2016; see overview in Zanettin 2020), little has yet addressed the new world of digital distribution and how this is affecting translation practices. Work on the digital distribution of comics (e.g. Priego 2010, Steirer 2014, Crucifix et al. 2017-19, Augureau et al. 2018) has tended not to address this at a global scale or to investigate how comics are distributed across languages.
