*CFP* "ROZHDESTVENSKY AND MEDIA", SPECIAL ISSUE, EXPLORATIONS IN MEDIA ECOLOGY JOURNAL

In Soviet Union and Russia, the connection between communication technologies, language and culture has been extensively studied. This field has been called “General language studies” and “Studies of culture”.  In North America, this field is called media ecology. On two sides of the iron curtain, scholars were developing similar frameworks. Since the fall of the iron curtain, the work of McLuhan has been translated and published in Russian.  The works of Yuri Lotman, Roman Jakobson, and Mikhail Bakhtin are available in English, but have not been sufficiently applied to advancing the field of media ecology. The work of Yuri Rozhdestvensky, the founder of the Russian school of media ecology, has been translated, but not yet published.

We invite the scholars from these two traditions to become more familiar with and inclusive of each other’s work. The special issue of Explorations in Media Ecology will introduce the anglophone community to the work of Yuri Rozhdestvensky, and will include papers which use the Russian and Soviet theoretical frameworks and traditions of the study of culture and communication. We hope this issue will enrich media ecology as a field.

A note on terminology:

“Фактура речи” and “внешняя материальная форма речи” are equivalent to “medium,” “communication medium”, and “communication technology”

“Словесность” is equivalent to “texts”

“Роды словесности” refer to classification of texts according to the medium

“Виды словесности” are genres of communication

“Устная словесность” is oral communication or oral texts

“Письменная словесность” writing, or written texts

“Печатная словесность” print, or printed texts

“Массовая коммуникация” applies to electronic media and mass media

Общая филология "General language studies," developed by Yuri Rozhdestvensky, is the examination of languages, grammars, rhetoric, communication in relation to various communication media.

Культуроведение "General culture studies," developed by Yuri Rozhdestvensky, is the study of semiotics and societies in relation to various communication media.

"Media ecology, as defined by Neil Postman, includes examination of the role of various communication media and how they have impacted human communication, perception, and experience".  Media ecology, in this definition, is directly connected to “general culture studies” and “general language studies”.

 

The journal:

Explorations in Media Ecology is the journal of the Media Ecology Association.  EME is indexed in such databases as Scopus, Communication & Mass Media Complete, International Bibliography of Book Reviews in Scholarly Literature in the Humanities and Social Sciences (IBR), International Bibliography of Periodical Literature in the Humanities and Social Sciences (IBZ), etc.

EME is a refereed journal. Strict anonymity is accorded to both authors and referees. References and citations should follow the Harvard Referencing system, and the journal otherwise follows standard British English for spelling and punctuation. All articles submitted should be original work and must not be under consideration by other publications.

The publication in EME is free.

EME accepts submissions that

• extend our understanding of media (defined in the broadest possible terms), including but not limited to communication technologies=фактуры речи 
• apply media ecological approaches (e.g. exploring the influence of the medium of communication on language, rhetoric, or society = исследование языка, риторики или семиотики в контексте фактуры речи и внешней материальной формы речи) 
• advance media ecology as a field of inquiry (=вносят вклад в развитие общей филологии, риторики по родам и видам словесности, или культуроведения)

As an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary publication, EME welcomes contributions embracing diverse theoretical, philosophical, and methodological approaches to the study of:

• Media (Внешняя материальная форма речи, фактура речи) processes of mediation through language, symbols, codes, meaning, processes of signification, abstracting, and perception;  (=создание и восприятие текстов и знаков) 
• art, music, literature, aesthetics, and poetics; 
• form, pattern, and method; 
• materials, energy, information, technology, and technique; 
• mind, thought, emotion, consciousness, identity, and behaviour; 
• groups, organizations, affiliations, communities; 
• politics, economics, religion, science, education, business, and the professions; 
• societies and cultures; 
• history and the future; 
• contexts, situations, systems, and environments; 
• evolution, and ecology; 
• the human person, human affairs, and the human condition; 
• etc.

 

EME publishes peer-reviewed scholarly articles, essays, research reports, commentaries, critical examinations.

Our Pedagogy Section focuses on teaching strategies and resources, pedagogical concerns, and issues relating to media ecology education; we are particularly interested in articles that share great ideas for teaching (GIFTs) media ecology in the classroom.

The Probes Section features short items that are exploratory or provocative in nature.

Poetry Section includes creative writing on media ecological themes.

Forum Section takes up questions of concern to media ecology scholars.

And our Review Section includes individual book reviews and review essays.

 

Requirements for articles:

The topic should fall within the broad parameters outlined above, in the section “The Journal”. The paper should not exceed 25 p. double spaced.  The paper should be written in standard British English. Citations format should follow the Harvard standard. Please see further details on the journal’s website in the section “Submission Guidelines”.

Deadline for submission of abstracts is January 15, 2021.  Deadline for submission of the full article for peer review is March 1, 2021. Abstracts should not exceed 150 words, and should be emailed to Maria Polski at mariap@eastwest.edu. Feedback on the abstracts will be provided within 1 week; feedback on the full articles will be provided within 5 weeks.
