*CFP* JAMES JOYCE / RICHARD LINKLATER, ESSAY COLLECTION

From the earliest reviews to the most recent monographs, commentators have noted the Austin-based director Richard Linklater’s overt references to James Joyce. We invite scholars of literature and film to submit 500-word proposals for essays exploring Joyce's fiction in relation to specific Linklater films.

The list of relevant Linklater projects includes (but is not restricted to): It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books (1988), Slacker (1991), Dazed and Confused (1993), the Before Trilogy (1994-2013), SubUrbia (1996), The Newton Boys (1998), Tape (2001), Waking Life (2001), School of Rock (2003), A Scanner Darkly (2006), Fast Food Nation (2006), Me and Orson Welles (2008), Bernie (2011), Boyhood (2014), Everybody Wants Some!! (2016), and Last Flag Flying (2017).

Although this list is not intended to be exhaustive, submissions might consider the following topics:

• Adaptation theory. 
• Aesthetics: classicism, romanticism, realism, modernism, and the avant-garde. 
• Alcohol and drugs. 
• Artistic and political iconoclasm. 
• Collaborations with women, and the representation of women and girls. 
• Cultural authenticity and the performance of identity. 
• Everyday life. 
• Experiments with dreams, technology, and time. 
• Family life: parents, children, and siblings. 
• Genres: comedy, documentary, experimental, romance, semi-autobiography. 
• History and memory. 
• Intellectualism, academia, and cultural institutions. 
• Masculinity: rites of passage and aging. 
• Natural landscapes and urban spaces. 
• Popular culture: sports, music, and fashion. 
• Racial and sectarian borders.
• Sexual initiations and identities. 
• Theater and film: history, culture, and theory. 
• War and violence. 
• Work, money, and class.
