*CFP* "JIM THOMPSON AND THE AMERICAN WEST: A CRITICAL COLLECTION", CHAPTER BOOK

Jim Thompson, a writer of hard-boiled crime fiction, was born in Anadarko, Indian Territory (Oklahoma), in 1906.  Thompson’s literary achievements were little-recognized during his lifetime; however, many of his works were re-discovered and re-published in the 1980s. His work is often lauded, noting his ability to understand the criminal mind.  His work is largely critiqued and categorized as only hard-boiled fiction, but his work defies such a simple genre classification.  Thompson combines the genres of crime fiction and Westerns and in doing so, his works read as critiques of American history and culture. Certainly much of Thompson’s work can be read as a critique of post-WWII America.

As David Cochrane points out Thompson’s works serve as “portraits of the marginal, alienated, and sociopathic inhabitants of America’s barren wastelands...  he specialized in showing  the psychic ravages inflicted on the victims of the American economic and political system” (14).  However, some of Thompson’s work is directly aimed at challenging the roots of frontier mythologies. Thompson’s life in the West, raised by a disgraced sheriff of Caddo County, Oklahoma, and spending his early years working in the oil fields, directly influences the characters he creates.

*CFP* "SEMIOTICS OF DISSIMULATION", THEMATIC ISSUE, VERSUS INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL

The international journal Versus (or VS, as is often known) is preparing a thematic issue about "Semiotics of Dissimulation". Versus is a Semiotic journal, dealing also with Theory and Philosophy of language, and it was founded in 1971 by Umberto Eco, who has been its director until February 2016. *CFP* "YOU ARE WHAT YOU POST: FOOD AND INSTAGRAM", CHAPTER BOOK

In the beginning, critics pegged Instagram as the site for polaroid-shaped pictures of brunch and babies. Its presumed whiteness, feminization, and superficial consumerism have been slow to draw sustained scholarly attention compared with Facebook and Twitter, despite the fact that by mid-2018, the image-based social media platform had topped one billion users worldwide. Now an extensive and heterogeneous visual ecosystem, Instagram’s unique relations between food and media—and the broader cultural significance of these dynamics—warrant critical scrutiny.

How does the “social photography” (Manovich 2014) of Instagram mediate ideas about food, eating, health, and nutrition? How does food intersect with diverse performances of identity, including celebrity, in the digital vernacular of posting photos with significant frequency? Considering more than 70% of American businesses are estimated to engage with the platform, how does the visual economy of Instagram participate in and reshape food and restaurant brand development and marketing? How does Instagram’s rapid global expansion reflect and reshape visual geographies of food and eating? Exploring these and other questions, this volume will bring together food and media studies scholars to cast an interdisciplinary lens on what we learn about the cultures and economies of food through the Instagram frame.

*CFP* “MEDIA EDUCATION IN IBERO-AMERICA: DEVELOPMENT AND CHALLENGES”, SPECIAL ISSUE, CONTRATEXTO

Guest editors

The 32nd edition of Contratexto will address the present and future of media education in Ibero-America, as well as its state of development and the challenges it presents. Media education concerns the role of traditional and new media as a subject matter. It is not limited to the role of ICTs as teaching tools, it is also about learning to use them.

This issue will highlight the importance of media education from a broad perspective, within a framework of growing interest in the topic. We are particularly interested in learning about new experiences and initiatives worked in the formal, non-formal and informal areas, corresponding to any educational level and aimed at different ages of social groups. Furthermore, we welcome the analysis of new practices and trends where educational and media processes converge; the use of traditional or digital media in learning contexts, the application of games or mobile devices with educational ends, the growth of self-learning and participative communities (i.e. fan-fiction writers and readers or gamers), the production of user-generated educational contents, the barriers and opportunities towards developing critical capabilities, as well as theory and epistemological debates pertaining these subjects.

*CFP* “MEDIA MANIPULATION, FAKE NEWS, AND MISINFORMATION IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION”, SPECIAL ISSUE, JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY EASTERN ASIA (JCEA)

Invited editor: Tim Dwyer, University of Sydney (timothy.dwyer sydney.edu.au)

In recent times there has been a noticeable shift in thinking about the possibilities for regulating social media platforms. A steady stream of scandals in relation to Facebook and Google sharing personal data with third parties, the growing evidence of Russian hacking of the 2016 US Presidential elections, and the role of the boutique data analytics firm, Cambridge Analytica contributed to this shift. The turn to regulatory solutions was prompted by both US Congressional and European Commission investigatory hearings. At the same time, there is a growing understanding that these media-tech platforms in the West and Eastern Asia use less than transparent algorithms to amass personal data for achieving various objectives. We are seeing ongoing investigations and new models of regulation are just around the corner. A pervading sense that the ‘Tech Giants’ have betrayed our trust arising from their role in spreading misinformation and the manipulation of breaking news calls out for more detailed theoretical and empirical analysis. For this special issue of the Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asiawe welcome any topics that deal with media manipulation, fake news, misinformation and disinformation.
