1. Gender Performativities in Democracy Under Threat

For the 7th International Congress on Cultural Studies we return to the debate on gender issues. In this edition, we aim to enquire the political, economic, social and historical materiality that gender issues and their performativities summon and articulate in times of democracy under threat.

2. Sessions

The 7th International Congress on Cultural Studies – Gender Performativities in Democracy Under Threat hosts three types of presentations: 

2.1 – Keynote Lectures

The lectures will be held by invited speakers, whose trajectories as researchers, activists and/or artists are well recognized nationally and internationally. 

2.2 – Communications and Performances

Our parallel sessions will include the presentation of papers and performances. Each session will be organized around a topic and will be composed of up to 5 papers that approach it from different perspectives, and will gather researchers, activists and artists in the discussion. Our purpose is for papers’ linkage to enable rich debates and to bring authors and audience together in the discussion.

The maximum presentation time of each paper is 10 minutes, followed by a longer period of discussion. The model for each presentation is up to each speaker. Creativity and multiplicity of format are encouraged.

The organization committee of the Congress challenges participants to find alternative formats to the already worn-out use of PowerPoint presentations, and warns that the availability of this equipment will be limited. In order to streamline the presentation process, we suggest that all participants use their own laptop computers.

Performance proposals will also be assessed regarding their feasibility, given the structural conditions of the available space for the event. All formats are welcome, but adaptations may be necessary. If in doubt, contact the organization committee.

3. Topics

We suggest some themes, but they do not enclose the scope of the 7th International Congress on Cultural Studies, so that the authors are free to contribute with different proposals:

• Gender, between the real and the virtual in (in)formal spaces: censorship, hate speech in the media and technological capitalism; 
• Social gender performances: patriarchy, formation of masculinities and bodies in gendered public and private spaces;
• Dissident bodies, technobodies, transhumans and post-humans: political resistances produced through and on the body;
• Feminisms and dissidences: race/ethnicity and intersectionality, cyberfeminisms and ecofeminism;
• Bodies, Sex Economy and Health: rights, pleasures, autonomies and violences;
• Public policies, gender, sexuality and agency in the educational context: teacher education, sex education and citizenship as resistances and strategies of non-normalization.

4. General guidelines

4.1 Abstract Submission

Paper and performance abstract submissions may have a maximum of 4 (four) co-authors. Proposals must be sent in one of the two official languages of the event, Portuguese and English, and present the following elements: title; abstract of up to 600 words; up to 5 keywords; authors; institutional filiation; type of presentation.

Each author may present a maximum of 3 papers/performances.

The deadline for abstract submission is 31 March. The abstract must be sent via the EasyChair platform. The result of the scientific committee’s assessment will be notified, via e-mail, until the 15 April.

4.2 Full paper submission

The full texts of the approved proposals must be submitted until 31 May. The submission in both of the Congress’s official languages, Portuguese and English, is mandatory. It is our intention to thereby guarantee the broadest international dissemination possible.

4.3 Rules for text formatting and paper presentation 

The presentations will be grouped by the organizing committee, as far as possible, around the topic indicated in the proposal submission. The proceedings with the accepted paper and performance abstracts will be available online on the Congress’s website, enabling consultation during the presentation.

Full texts must be sent in both of the event’s official languages, in a single file. They must be 8 to 10 pages long; font: Georgia, 11 pt. (body), 10 pt. (quotes), 9 pt. (footnotes); spacing 1,5 (body), 1,0 (quotes and footnotes); paragraph: 10 pt.; references at the end. See the template for text formatting here.

5. Publication

The congress proceedings will be published online in two volumes, one for each official language, with different ISBNs. All accepted performance abstracts and full papers, sent before the established deadline, will be available in this online publication.

It is foreseen that, in 2021, a book with the selection of the best papers presented during the Congress will be published
