The problem
of gender imbalances has never been in the spotlight as it is nowadays. Even if
it affects all spheres (political, economic, social and cultural), that of
communication and the media is particularly relevant.
The aim of
this special issue of Quaderns del CAC is to make visible the research on
communication, media and gender, in order to contribute to a better
understanding of this polyhedral phenomenon. The inclusion of the gender
perspective is essential in any communication study, in order to provide an
unbiased view of reality. In this regard, the research on communication and
gender of the last four decades has come a long way with relevant
contributions. Research on the role of women in the media system and their
representation in media content have contributed to map the imbalances, their
manifestations and consequences, and to pave the way for new approaches related
to the complexity of the issue. These lines of research are supplemented by
others about audiences, languages and about the contribution of the media to
equality policies or the inclusion of the gender perspective in the creation of
content for all cultural industries and in any media: press, radio, television,
movies, video games, social networks, new media... At the same time, women’s
empowerment processes both in traditional media and social media, as well as
LGBT and Queer studies constitute new promising research perspectives.
We welcome
papers that help to explain –from a wide range of approaches in the field of
communication, media and gender – not only the ‘what’ and ‘how’ but also the
‘why’ and ‘what for’ of this complex and multifaceted reality. We invite submissions addressing, but not
restricted, to the following topics
- Representation of gender in media content (informative, persuasive, narrative, entertainment...)
- Power relations, organizational culture and gender imbalances
- Feminization of work in the media

- Communication and sexist violence
- Reception and consumption of gender stereotypes
- Harassment and social networks
