La Fusta,
the digital Italian Studies journal edited by the Italian Graduate Society at
Rutgers University, is now welcoming submissions in English or Italian. Issue
27 (Spring 2019) will concentrate on the theme “New Generations of Italian
Writers.” Articles, book reviews, and creative writing are being considered for
publication.
Premio
Strega, Premio Campiello, and other literary awards attract readerships as much
as they did in the past. Some of the intellectuals emerging as best-selling
authors, such as Camilleri and Ferrante, have written captivating stories which
reflect the varied cultural landscape of Italy. Furthermore, while society and
culture have always influenced literature, recent immigration to Italy has
affected the works of writers to an unprecedented degree. We welcome articles
that consider theoretical discussions about authorship and the figure of the
author, social issues, multicultural communication, reflections on migration
and integration, and the connection between ‘letteratura della migrazione’ and
the mainstream literature.
Potential
topics include, but are not limited to the following:
- Cultural intersections and perspectives of contemporary bilingual authors who write in Italian
- Immigrant writers and first-generation Italians (‘seconde generazioni’) writing in Italian; for instance, authors such as Sumaya Abdel Qader, Cristina Ali Farah, Chaimaa Fatihi, Randa Ghazy, Rania Ibrahim, Amara Lakhous, and Igiaba Scego
- Italian-American literature since the 1990s
- Recent critically-acclaimed authors such as Niccolò Ammaniti, Andrea Camilleri, Paola Capriolo, Melania Mazzucco, Andrea Molesini, Aldo Nove, Tiziano Scarpa, and Simona Vinci
- Elena Ferrante’s books and the film adaptations of her writings
- Film adaptations of recent books, such as La solitudine dei numeri primi and Io non ho paura
- Women’s identity and local culture, as seen, for instance, in Acciaio by Silvia Avallone, and in Michela Murgia’s books, and in other contemporary authors.
Contributions
should be anonymous. Please send submissions (articles, book reviews, or
creative writing) with a separate short bio (100 words) to
italian.grad.society@gmail.com.
The
deadline for submissions is March 15, 2019.
