We are
facing strong transformations towards scientific communication and the
geography of science. Social media and other digital environments have been
each day more used by researchers and institutions to promote their researches
to society, modifying the way through which the social impact of the scientific
production is measured. New opportunities and a series of challenges impose to
peripheral countries, considering that the coverage and data quality of the
alternative metrics don´t use to be compatible with the dynamics of scientific
communication developed in this region. At the same time, Open Science grows in
Latin America, as an answer to balance the inequalities in the circulation of
science. Important institutions have been decisive in the spreading of a kind
of a Latin-American science more open, transparent, reproducible and
responsible to the region.
Scielo,
Redalyc, Doaj, Latindex are examples of institutions that, along with several
initiatives to the region, as the Declaration of Panama, are in the front line
of the development of the science on the continent. Towards this panorama of
great transformations to the Latin-American science, the call to the special
issue of Transinformação journal (Q2 SJR) oriented to researchers of Latin America
and the Caribbean, seeking to explore topics related to the improvements of
researches about altmetrics and Open Science in the Latin-American context.
