The Second and Third Generation. The Experiences of the Descendants of Refugees from National Socialism

It has long been recognised that the experiences of refugees from National Socialism, their persecution, incarceration, hiding, emigration, resettlement, further migration, trauma and later lives has had an impact on their children and grandchildren. This conference will explore this in all its facets and different expressions. We are hoping to focus both on the relationship between the generations as well as the specific differences between generations. We are looking for proposals that will take different methodological approaches, such as historical, anthropological, psychological and cultural, to include Literary, Film and Heritage Studies.

Themes might include:

• Second Generation Organisations 
• The relationship between the generations 
• The transmission of trauma 
• Comparative studies of the UK, US and Israel etc. 
• Memory and Post-memory 
• The difference between the Second and Third Generation
• Artistic Representations by members of the Second and Third Generation in art, literature and film 
• Education and the role of the Second Generation and Third Generation 
• Differences and similarities between the descendants of different groups, for example adult and child refugees, adult and child survivors, adult and child Displaced Persons

Please send abstracts (350 words max) and a short bio (250 words max) in the same file to Jane Lewin (jane.lewin@sas.ac.uk) by 20 September 2019. We will notify you by 31 October 2019 whether we can include your proposal in our conference programme. We would like to encourage scholars at all stages of their career to consider sending a proposal, and are applying for funds to assist with the cost of travel to London.

A selection of papers will be published in the Yearbook of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies (Brill). The Yearbook is a peer-reviewed journal and inclusion is not guaranteed.
