*CFP* LLAMADA A ARTÍCULOS, VOL. 1 Nº 2 (2022), REVISTA SERIARTE

*CFP* “BOB DYLAN ON SCREEN”, CHAPTER BOOK

On May 12, 1963, Bob Dylan left the set of the Ed Sullivan Show, incensed the producers rejected his decision to “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues.” This non-circulation of his image through television provided valuable publicity and Dylan would boast of “the song they didn’t let me play on TV.” This incident stands at the beginning of an ambivalent and complicated relationship between Dylan’s persona, as expressed through his words and music, and its dissemination through screen media. This has been an uneven process: the documentary Dont Look Back (1967) is a classic of direct cinema and played an important role in broadcasting Dylan’s image, but its planned follow-up, Eat the Document (1972), went a different direction: Dylan insisted on editing it himself, it showed once on television and vanished into obscurity. The editing alone of his self-directed four-hour film Renaldo and Clara (1978) occupied more than a year of Dylan’s career, which should logically qualify it as a major work. Instead it’s little more than a footnote even for Dylan’s most devoted fans, watched by few and liked by fewer; Martin Scorsese’s repurposing of footage in Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story (2019) may be Renaldo and Clara’s lone legacy. Masked and Anonymous (2003) was scarcely better received. Though it found some admirers, Dylan himself would express disappointment with it in a 2012 interview with Mikal Gilmore, stating that, When you want to make a film and you’re using outside money, there’s just too many people you have to listen to. He even joked that they should have hired Cate Blanchett to play his part, Jack Fate.

*CFP "POLITICAL IDEOLOGY IN EVERYDAY SOCIAL MEDIA USE", SPECIAL EDITION, SOCIAL SEMIOTICS JOURNAL

Scholars have looked extensively at social media in terms of its potential to reinvigorate democratic participation and/or bring new political voices into our civic sphere (Coffey and Woolworth 2004; Denisova 2019; Merrin 2019). But everyday social media use is less about voicing political views and more about engaging in the mundane, where in the matter of a few minutes we laugh along to memes and mash ups that ridicule the powerful, comment on shared music videos, read a food recipe and watch someone unbox a new pair of trainers. From the perspective of Critical Discourse Studies, social media brings the opportunity to look at the political and ideological in a different way.

Here, we can critically consider how ideologies infuse the everyday and mundane forms of communication across and between platforms where we engage with and communicate about entertainment, family issues, celebrity and political gossip, transport, health, food, sport and leisure. In this special edition, we start from the perspective that this type of engagement is ideological, deeply inscribed with values and ideas. It is in everyday use where discourses are articulated, parodied, altered and/ or taken for granted. And it is this area our special issue critically explores.

*CFP* "MINA. THE VOICE OF SILENCE: PRESENCE AND ABSENCE OF A POP ICON", INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Mina. The voice of silence: Presence and absence of a pop icon
International Conference
Organized by Giulia Muggeo, Gabriele Rigola, Jacopo Tomatis
March 23-24 2020

Mina’s body – with its presence and absence – crosses the last sixty years of Italian history. Starting from her debut as an urlatrice on the 1950s television show Il Musichiere, and in the Italian musicarelli movies between 1959 and 1960, up to her “physical” farewell in 1978 and her latest “virtual” appearances, Mina stands out as one of the most powerful Italian pop icon. During her entire career, Mina was able to establish herself as a key figure of Italian popular culture, but also as a cult artist, paving the way in Italy for an American-inspired sophisticated song (Fabbri 2008, p. 113). Yet, there are many more Minas: the TV icon of the 1960s, the reassuring presence (and voice) of the Carosello commercials, the independent woman blamed by the media, the record producer, the columnist...

*CFP* “THE TRANSATLANTIC CAREERS OF GARY OLDMAN AND TIM ROTH”, ONE-DAY SYMPOSIUM

"The Transatlantic Careers of Gary Oldman and Tim Roth"
Organized by Jean-François Baillon (CLIMAS),
and David Roche (RiRRa21)
March 6-7 2020, Nîmes, Festival Ecrans Britanniques

As a part of the 23th edition of the film festival Écrans britanniques, this one-day conference will focus on two British actors, Gary Oldman and Tim Roth, as State of Britain actors. Both are emblematic of an aesthetic and a dramatic education profoundly modified by the evolution of education and cultural funding in the UK. This conference would like to ask whether the likes of Gary Oldman and Tim Roth are still possible on the British stage and screen? As such this conference will participate in the pluri-disciplinary discussions of CAS 1 and 3 on the politics of the stage and the screen.

*CFP* "AVANT-GARDE AND POPULAR FORMS BETWEEN MUSIC AND VISUAL MEDIA", SPECIAL ISSUE Nº 33, CINÉMA&CIE INTERNATIONAL FILM STUDIES JOURNAL

In 1987, Simon Frith and Howard Horne’s "Art into Pop" questioned the rise of British Post-War popular music within the context of art schools, employing cross-terms such as “rock bohemians” and “pop situationists”. The authors focused on the 1970s and the aftermath of punk, finding a close relation between popular music forms and art forms in the contexts of several British cities as well as in New York City. More recently, Simon Reynolds traced the genealogy of an “artistic bias” in popular music back to the post-punk period of the late 1970s, when “art ideas affected actual musical practices” (2009: 365) due to the influence of not musically trained artists coming from the NYC experimental scene such as Yoko Ono and Brian Eno.

So far, scholarly investigations on the intersections between popular music and culture and avant-garde arts have been mostly limited to the social cultural milieu of only two decades (1960s/1970s) and two countries (U.S.A./U.K.). Essay such as Bernard Gendron’s "Between Montmartre and the Mudd Club" (2002) and Sytze Seenstra’s "We are the noise between the stations" (2003) constitute two notable exceptions through their reframing of the American punk scene and of David Byrne’s work through a diachronical comparison with French modernism and conceptual romanticism, respectively. They do not only reassess the collapse of hierarchical distinction between the social function played by high arts and mass culture with the advent of late modernity/postmodernity, but also take into serious consideration the relationships between different media domains.

*CFP* INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE "ENDANGERED BODIES: REPRESENTING AND POLICING THE BODY IN WESTERN POPULAR CULTURE", UNIVERSITY OF LISBON

The notion of 'endangered bodies', or bodies in danger, arises from our concern with current western political and socio-economic tendencies and practices against the discriminated or disenfranchised Other, whose body is physically, materially and symbolically subjected to internal pressures towards normalization and homogenization. The vulnerability or differential power of the Other's body becomes, in this sense, subject to social control and / or commodification. The different pressures and actions taken against these bodies are filtered and manipulated through popular culture, in ways that do not always provide accurate representations of the social / political / material issues they raise, many times exacerbating them in insidious forms of policing.
