*CFP* "REFLECTIONS AND REVERSALS. SYMBIOSIS BETWEEN POLITICAL COMMUNICATION AND AUDIOVISUAL FICTION", III INTERNACIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF POLITICAL COMMUNICATION

Reflections and reverslas. Symbiosis between political communication and audiovisual fiction

III International Symposium of Political Communication

Faculty of Philology and Communication

University of Barcelona

December 2-3, 2021

Even though audiovisual fiction is usually studied within cultural bounds (Trenzado Romero, 2000), it also presents an important political dimension taking into account that representations play a large role “when it comes to determining which social reality is to be constructed; that is, which figures and forms will prevail in the process of modelling life and social institutions” (Ryan and Kellner, 1988: 13). The spectacularisation of politics is inspired, partly, by the processes of fictionalisation and, at the same time, spheres such as the cinema or scenarios characteristic of serialised fiction are also a reflection of that reality (Rodríguez and Padilla, 2018). In turn, fiction can be a pretext of understanding so as to find the significance of knowledge and to try to bring it closer to a framework of reality (Oliveros Aya, 2010). However, beyond being a call and a reminder of certain events or political phenomena, fiction can also represent reality “by means of a different type of evidence and therefore it can offer a different and more complete approach to realism” (Whitebrook, 1991: 5). It can be said that, as a significant part of mass culture, audiovisual fiction contributes decisively to the formation, debate, inspiration and interpretation of a variety of political imaginaries.

*CFP* “ROUTLEDGE COMPANION TO RADIO STUDIES”, CHAPTER BOOK OF THE ROUTLEDGE MEDIA COMPANION SERIES

Dear colleagues, we are calling for abstracts for the new Routledge Companion to Radio Studies, to be published in 2021.

This Routledge Companion to Radio Studies will be a valuable reference source for the expanding field of radio, audio and podcast study. It will bring together 40-50 original essays to conceptualise the multidisciplinary field of radio studies. We welcome entries from early career researchers to emeriti scholars using theories and methods from media studies, historical studies, politics, communication, journalism, sociology and anthropology. We are looking for work that spans national boundaries and historical periods to present a coherent argument for understanding radio as a synecdoche for and a key agent in the creation of the last hundred years of technological, psychological, and cultural innovation and experience.

*CFP* “LOOKING BACK, STEPPING FORWARD”, JAFP, UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA

Looking back, stepping forward
Journal of Adaptation in Film & Performance symposium (JAFP)
Monday 15 July 2019

Adaptation, a concept that may be perceived to encompass a range of reworkings across and within media, allows us to interrogate creative and critical relationships between texts of different modalities, genres and styles. The ‘media journeys’ of adaptation continue to make the field and its multifarious processes exciting, urgent and evolving.

This symposium, which is organised to celebrate the conclusion of the first decade of the Journal of Adaptation in Film & Performance – and the dynamic beginning of its second decade – welcomes proposals from scholars and reflective practitioners (creative artists across all performance media as well as archivists engaged with adaptations and translations in stage, screen or otherwise mediatic performance) at all stages of a professional career (academic or extramural to academia).

*CFP* “MEDIA & COMMUNICATION: THE STATE OF THE ART”, DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY

27-28 June 2019

Keynotes:

We see in the classroom, our students are concerned not with the BBC or newspapers, but with Instagram, Pinterest and other forms of networked digital media. This raises questions about the ways in which media theory is responsive to new technological developments: are traditional media theories sufficient to explain changes in technology, society and audiences? The central aim of this conference is to explore the extent to which existing theories of media and communication are adequate for the analysis of our contemporary media landscape.

*CFP* “THE YOUTHIFICATION OF TELEVISION AND SCREEN CULTURE”, BIANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE TELEVISION STUDIES SECTION OF ECREA

The Youthification of Television and Screen Culture
Biannual Conference of the Television Studies Section of ECREA
24-25 October 2019

Confirmed keynote speakers:

Television is constantly testing its definitional boundaries. What was formerly defined by ways of transmission and screen technology, is more and more in dissolution in today's mediated landscape. Young people, especially, are turning away from traditional broadcast television - and turning towards other screens and formats. This development is forcing established structures to react and adapt to this new viewing culture. Novel formats, such as the Norwegian teen drama series 'SKAM' or the Spanish talent show 'Operación Triunfo Star Academy', proved to be extremely successful in overcoming the traditional boundaries of the medium, amongst others by including multi-platform technology and storytelling via social networks.

*CFP* “FILM AND ETHICS”, SPECIAL ISSUE, CINEMA: JOURNAL OF PHILOSOPHY AND THE MOVING IMAGE

This issue will be dedicated to explore film as a medium of ethical experience. A special focus will be given to enquire film’s aesthetic/ethical relationship: film’s path from normative ethics to applied ethics; the extent to which aesthetic form, or style, determine ethical meaning; the way it instigates ethical understandings and cultural-political awareness and how it involves ethical/political statements.

Exploring the issue of film and ethics also provides a rich way of revisiting the legacy of film theory, especially with regard to cinema’s ideological and political dimensions, since film’s aesthetics and ethics have always enjoyed a close, if sometimes troubled, relationship. Examples can be found in such different developments such as Jean Epstein’s notion of the ‘enhanced moral value’ of photogenie; the political and moral capacities of montage by Eisenstein; Kracauer’s and André Bazin’s moral and aesthetic realism, Cinéma Verité’s concerns about the ethics of the medium and its claimed objectivity; documentary film’s ethical enquires on ‘realism’; Jean Luc-Godard’s famous statement ‘les travellings sont affaire de morale’ (‘tracking shots are a question of morality’), and Werner Herzog’s notion of Ecstatic truth. On the other hand, the films of Lars von Trier, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Haneke, or the New French Extremism, are recent examples of ethical experiences done against ethics itself.

*CFP* "DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IN COMMUNICATION", 6TH INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION DAYS

6th International Communication Days: Digital Transformation
2-3 May 2019
Istanbul, TURKEY

Üsküdar University Communication Faculty is hosting the sixth International Communication Days on 02 - 03 May 2019. This year’s symposium title is “Digital Transformation”. Since 2014, International Communication Days is being held annually with invited guests. In the previous symposiums, scholars discussed topics as “Digital Addiction” and “Digital Culture” and its effects on public opinion was noteworthy. This year, as invited papers, poster presentations will take place at the symposium.

In addition to the digital communication technologies that marked the era, the media sector and communication sciences have undergone significant changes and transformations. On the one hand, media professionals have been trying to adapt to the new era in which production, distribution and administration are surrounded by digital technologies. On the other hand, academicians have been searching new theories and methodologies in order to analyze and interpret the changing era. In Digital Transformation Symposium, the era of digitization will be discussed in several dimensions with the participation of academicians and media professionals. Thus, while developing a new vision for scientific field, it is aimed to display the requirements of the era in communication education by probing the experiences, education, job opportunities and processes in the digital world.

*CFP* “SURFACES, BOUNDARIES, FORMATS OF CONTEMPORARY IMAGES”, SPECIAL ISSUE IMAGO - STUDI DI CINEMA E MEDIA

Imago - Studi di cinema e media, n. 20/2019. Contemporary visual culture investigates the materiality of images and their status as objects, as well as their structure, their boundaries, and their points of contact with other experiences and phenomena. The /Imago 20/ dossier aims to address the multifarious ways images permeate the current mediascape (Pinotti-Somaini). The ever-increasing changeability that connotes the surfaces of digital images demands a thorough interrogation of pixel culture, shedding light upon the mobility, ductility, and reversibility of contemporary devices (Casetti). At the same time, a stronger awareness seems to be emerging about the issue of the aspect ratio, whose fluidity plays a primary role in both social and authorial practices (Doane).

Such an awareness has given the term “format” renewed relevance. On the one hand, in connection to cinema, it concerns the geometric configuration of images, i.e. the shape through which they frame the world. Recent mainstream cinema seems to be playing with horizontal, vertical and square frames, in order to produce complex creative and theoretical discourses; and the development of such a trend might be connected to the new frames implemented by smartphones and mobile devices.
