Innovations Online
Workshop
Thursday May 9
The Innovations in Online Research Network is a regional
academic group that aspires to connect postgraduate researchers across the
North West of England interested in online research methods. We also aim to
promote interdisciplinary and collaborative research opportunities for all
involved.
This new network will be launched with the first Innovations
in Online Research Workshop, on 9 May 2019 (9:30-4:45). This FREE PGR-led
workshop will be hosted by The University of Manchester’s Sociology Department
in conjunction with postgraduate researchers from The University of Liverpool
and Lancaster University. The event is open to all PGR students in the social sciences
who use or plan to use online research methods.
The event will include a roundtable, group discussion
sessions, and a networking reception where participants will showcase their
research using an A3 sized mini-poster. The event seeks to stimulate important
debates about using online methods for social science research in the digital
age. Workshops will be focused around these broad topics:
- New forms of online data
- Participant access, sampling and ethical issues
- Reflexivity, researcher bias, and representing the online space
- Inequalities in online research
There will also be a keynote by Jamie Hakim from EastAnglia University about the role of the digital in people’s negotiation of
digital austerity.
To apply please register here. You will be asked to submit a short statement of interest (between 200 and 300
words, focusing on how the event is relevant to your research and how you are
using online methods) as well as a mini-poster plan. The mini-poster plan
should be in the form of bullet points on your planned poster content, which
could include the ways you have used online methods in your work, the
complications you have faced or your theoretical ideas about online methods.
Registration is open until 8 April 2019, or until the event
reaches capacity.
