This edited volume of Lexington Books (an imprint of the
Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc.) invites scholars from a broad
range of disciplines to submit manuscripts on the theme of “Minority Women and
Western Media: Challenging Representations and Articulating New Voices”.The
edited volume will join the Communicating Gender book series published by
Lexington Books.
Representations of minority women are often limited and
predominantly negative in much of Western mainstream media. The experience of
minority women in the West can involve discrimination and misrepresentation not
only because of gender but also race, religion, class, sexual orientation and
perceptions of their otherness. Sub-cultures and community dynamics may further
marginalize women compared to their male counterparts such that when minorities
speak, it is in fact minority men speaking.
The research presented in this edited volume will examine
existing representations as well as spaces carved out by minority women in an
attempt to have their voices heard. Thus, the book seeks to scrutinize two
types of media representations; the first is where minority women are passively
covered in/by the media and the second where minority women produce their own
content to tell their stories. Theoretical as well as qualitative and
quantitative approaches are welcome.
Following these considerations, scholars are invited to
submit their original manuscripts that address the following topics, among
others:
- Critiques of representations of minority women
- Challenging stereotypical representations
- Women’s voices in new media
- Creation of new spaces for women’s voices
- History and development of minority media
- Community media with gender focus
- Other topics (please enquire with the editors in advance)
