*CFP* "ANTHOLOGY: WOMEN AND FOLK HORROR", EDITED COLLECTION

Seeking essays on women in folk horror for a forthcoming anthology (tentatively titled: "What No Man May See Nor Woman Tell: Essays on Women in Folk Horror").

Edited by Peg Aloi (co-editor, with Hannah Johnston, of "The New Generation Witches" and "Carnivale and the American Grotesque"). Author of forthcoming book "The Witching Hour: How Witches Enchanted Popular Culture" (2021?)

Seeing as how writings on folk horror are somewhat dominated by male voices, this anthology seeks proposals from women writers on any and all aspects of folk horror, but particularly interested in folk horror made by women artists (such as The Babadook, The Wind, Relic, etc.), women portrayed in folk horror, gender tropes and sexuality or gender/sexual identity in folk horror, standards of feminine or masculine "beauty" in folk horror, folk horror and domesticity, etc. etc. (Women, non-binary and transgender writers to the front, please, but if any men have a strong proposal they will receive full consideration also.)

Please craft a proposal of 250 words or less. This will not be a strictly academic anthology, but erudition and very fine writing are encouraged! Personal memoirs/essays considered as long as they focus on the texts. Texts may include films, TV, novels, poetry, fine art, theatre, music (murder ballads? psych folk?). Discussing more than one text along a theme: definitely! Essays exploring the context, history, definition, etc. of folk horror may be considered if they have a strong angle. Poems/stories...maybe? Essay lengths may vary: shorter essays (1500-2000 words) welcome, 3000 words a good length, nothing longer than 5000 words.

Deadline for proposals: Autumn Equinox 2020, September 22, 2020

Deadline for finished essays: Yuletide 2020.

The folk horror conference scheduled in Leeds for sometime next summer may also do an anthology so we'll try not to overlap with that project if so.

Remuneration will depend on the publisher (who will be approached once we have some solid sense of the proposals): any profits will be split equally amng controbutors once any potential out of pocket expenses or services (such as indexing, etc.) are paid for. But because I believe in paying for women's work I am already going to promise you'll get a small honorarium from me for contributing (even if it's only $20). Let's hope it will be more!
