*CFP* "SCREEN BODIES SPECIAL ISSUE: BRAIN-COMPUTER INTERFACES", SPECIAL ISSUE OF BRAIN-COMPUTER INTERFACES

The field of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) has advanced rapidly over the last few years. From consumer friendly companies like OpenBCI and Emotiv, that make BCI technology and its vast applications available to the masses, to Elon Musk’s much publicized company Neuralink, brain-computer interfaces are on the precipice of revolutionizing every aspect of our lives. Without question, brain-computer interfaces will attain cultural saturation in the near future.

This special issue of Screen Bodies is devoted to examining the numerous vital questions raised by the flourishing of brain-computer interfaces. We welcome contributions from those in all relevant fields, from neuroscientists to artists to biohackers and beyond.

Guiding questions include:

  • How is BCI prompting a reconceptualization of the body?
  • What are the ethics of brain-computer interfaces?
  • How are artists using BCI? Is there an aesthetics of BCI?
  • What are the politics of BCI?
  • How will BCI alter how we engage with media? With the market? With one another?
  • What is the significance of BCI technology’s availability to the masses?
  • What are BCI’s applications?
  • What open problems in neuroscience and neuroengineering concerning BCI have been recently solved?
  • How is BCI impacting research and applications in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, medicine, and biotechnology?
  • How is BCI impacting innovations in augmented reality?
  • How is BCI affecting gaming?
  • What is the relationship of BCI and big data?
  • What are the most pressing debates, positive potentials, and pitfalls concerning BCI?

Please submit manuscripts to Andrew J. Ball (screenbodies@berghahnjournals.com) before October 5th, 2020.
