*CFP* "FLORIDA LEISURE", VOL. 1, ISSUE 8 (2019), JOURNAL OF FLORIDA STUDIES


Journal of Florida Studies (JFS) is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to the study and appreciation of Florida. JFS features research articles, but also includes poetry, fiction, photography, and other digital arts. JFS does not charge authors a publishing fee nor any other fees.

All JFS online content is available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Beginning Fall 2019 JFS print copies can be purchased through the University Press of Florida. Users may read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the online articles.

Over the last century, the pursuit of leisure has played an increasing role in Florida’s politics, land use, economics, and culture, forever changing the perceptions of our state. Recognizing this role, Journal of Florida Studies is proud to announce a call for its special issue, “Florida Leisure,” to be published November 2019. This special JFS issue, edited by Professor Jamie Murphy, welcomes academic and creative work of all kinds that takes an historical, critical, or informative approach to the role of leisure and related pastimes such as tourism, events, recreation, and sports in Florida.

Possible themes include:

  • Leisure studies: theories, methodologies, applications 
  • Leisure studies and intersectionality 
  • Travel and tourism 
  • Economics of leisure 
  • Hospitality and travel industry studies 
  • Land, water, and space travel 
  • Land use 
  • Climate change and weather 
  • Leisure activities in film, television, music, literature, and the arts 
  • Eco-tourism or sustainability in leisure, hospitality, tourism, travel, events, or sports 
  • Travel and tourism in literature 
  • Theme parks, old and new 
  • Leisure and the semiotics of marketing and advertising 
  • Outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, bicycling, canoeing, water skiing, bird watching, hunting, surfing, tennis, running, snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing 
  • Sports such as football, basketball, baseball, swimming, surfing, lacrosse, and soccer 
  • Professional sports such as football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and ice hockey 
  • Events such as conferences, conventions, food festivals, concerts, historical reenactments 
  • Leisure accommodations such as cruise ships, house boats, trains, condominiums, Airbnb
