The biopic, or biographical motion picture, chronicles the life of a
historical figure (or historically-based figure). It seems that a year cannot
go by without at least a handful of biopics entering theaters, television
screens, and award nominations. Why has this genre of film and television
become so popular (or so consistently produced)? Why is Hollywood so
preoccupied with this genre? The biopic is a globally used format, why does
this genre perform so well internationally? In Media Res seeks submissions that
engage with this topic and approach this subject from a variety of lenses
including, but not limited to:
Topics may include:
- Biopic films and historical framing of race/gender
- Issues of identity politics
- Discussions of award-show adoration for biopics
- Global/international constructions of the biopic
- Issues of historical accuracy in the biopic
- Does accuracy matter? Should liberties be taken?
Proposals may be brief, but do be sure to describe the topic and key
question(s) to be explored (as well as your name, affiliation, and Twitter
handle if applicable). Please submit your proposal by October 7, 2019. If
interested, please contact In Media Res (inmediares@gsu.edu) with topic
proposals or for more information about the theme. Be sure to include the name
of the theme week you would like to be involved with in the subject line of the
email.
Academics, journalists, critics, media professionals and fans are all
welcome to submit proposals.
The actual piece will include either a 30-second to 3-minute clip, an
image, or a slideshow that will be accompanied by a 300 to 350-word response
to/contextualization of your clip, image, or slideshow. In addition to your
piece, you will be expected to engage the other pieces presented that week to
encourage discussion and further flesh out the individual topic in relation to
the week’s theme.
