In Media Res is looking for curators that are examining the topic of
Infertility in Media. Instances of infertility in media have been limited and
restricted through the functions of humor, children’s narratives, and quick
resolutions. Examples of this include Robin’s narrative arc on How I Met Your
Mother, Disney’s Up, and Carla’s story in Scrubs. In Media Res is looking to
explore how such instances have an impact on the social and cultural impacts,
understandings, and performances of infertility.
Curators can approach these related movements through a variety of
lenses and methods including, but not limited to:
- Rhetoric of infertility
- Stigmatization of infertility
- Representations of infertility
- Infertility and pregnancy as oppositional in media
- Media as a support network
- Infertility and marginalized groups
Further, we are looking to collect a variety of perspectives and
research on infertility in media not listed here. Proposals may be brief, but
do be sure to describe the topic and key question(s) to be explored. Please
submit your proposal by August 19, 2019.
If interested, please contact In Media Res (inmediares@gsu.edu) with
topic proposals or for more information about the theme. Be sure to include the
name of the theme week you would like to be involved with in the subject line
of the email. Academics, journalists, critics, media professionals and fans are
all welcome to submit proposals.
The actual piece will include either a 30-second to 3-minute clip, an
image, or a slideshow that will be accompanied by a 300 to 350 word response
to/contextualization of your clip, image, or slideshow. In addition to your
piece, you will be expected to engage the other pieces presented that week to
encourage discussion and further flesh out the individual topic in relation to
the week’s theme.
