International Seminar Visual Framing of Food Technologies
Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands)
16-18 October 2019
In the age of post truth, scientifically informed visualizations and
imaginaries of innovative food technologies are hard to distinguish from the
production of art, or even ‘alternative facts’. These visuals travel easily
across administrative borders through internet platforms (e.g. Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), affecting both online and offline social,
political, policy and regulatory practices. Visualization and visual framing
play an important – but often neglected – role in affecting actor relations,
and the space to deal with innovations in food production and consumption.
To encourage international transdisciplinary collaborations and
cross-pollination of ideas and methods, the Department of Social Sciences of Wageningen University & Research organizes the first “International Seminar
on Visual Framing of Food Technologies” on 16th until the 18th of October,
2019.
The seminar consists of a roundtable and three keynote lectures by Prof. Huub Dijstelbloem; Dr. Kelly Clancy, and Prof. Sabine Niederer. Next to that,
we organize paper panels for which we invite you to send an abstract.
Topics for the paper-sessions include (but are not limited to): (1)
data-visualization of food and food (processing) technologies; (2) Visual
framing analysis of food (processing technologies) on Internet and social media
platforms; (3) Traveling of facts, fiction and ‘myths’ on the internet, in
social media; (4) Trust and communication of science through visualizations.
Please send your abstract (500 words max.), title, along with your
affiliation and contact information to eduardo.rojaspadilla@wur.nl by 20th
August, 2019. Review and acceptance of papers can be expected by 10th
September, 2019.
This seminar is organized by Dr. Tamara Metze, Eduardo Rojas-Padilla;
Dr. Elaine Rabello, and Efrat Gommeh (Public Administration and Policy), Dr. Jasper de Vries (Strategic Communication) and Prof. Dr. Karin Schroen (Food
Processes Engineering), and supported by the Department of Social Sciences of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) Excellence Grant.
